The Gaines Group was honored today with an award from the Virginia Sustainable Building Network for 'best green residential project - renovation' for their work on a 1890's home renovation.
Renovating the existing housing stock in this country is a primary need for our future energy demands. This project is a perfect example of how to take a structurally sound project and make it efficient, healthy, and functional. The renovation replaced outdated systems that were costing the homeowner money and resources monthly with efficient systems that added comfort and security to their home allowing them to further conserve resources by staying in place.
This home stands as an example that all homes can be renovated if a late 1800’s home can achieve high performance standards of today. As the homeowner states: "We wanted to stay in our house for the long run, but we were paying for its age in drafty rooms and high energy bills," said Nicholas Duke. This renovation answered his goals providing for an efficient, healthy home.
This home was one of the first in Central Virginia to achieve the Home Performance with Energy Star Certification.
