Steel beams from the World Trade Center were on display at the Fishers Freedom Festival June 26 as part of Project 9/11 Indianapolis. The beams are making stops at festivals throughout the Indianapolis area before becoming part of a permanent 9/11 Memorial near the White River in downtown Indianapolis.
Project 9/11 Indianapolis, headed by Indianapolis firefighter Greg Hess, will establish a permanent Indianapolis memorial dedicated to those killed in the terrorist attacks of 9/11/2001. Hess was a member of Indiana Task Force 1, one of the first FEMA Search & Rescue teams to arrive at Ground Zero. In 2010, Hess petitioned the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey to obtain two steel beams from the World Trade Center to use in the Indianapolis memorial. Hess' request was granted, and those steel beams will be the focal point of Project 9/11 Indianapolis.
The Memorial will be dedicated on September 11, 2011, the 10th anniversary of the attacks at the World Trade Center, Shanksville, Pennsylvania, and the Pentagon. Project 9/11 Indianapolis will be built at 421 West Ohio Street along the White River Canal.
Until the Sept. 11 dedication, the beams can be seen at these locations:
July 3rd - CarmelFest
July 4th - Donato's Downtown Freedom Blast
Aug. 5-21 - Indiana State Fair
Aug. 20th - Russ Dellen Memorial Loop
9/11/2011 - Dedication of Project 9/11 Indianapolis.
