As a manager I have Realtors visiting my office asking me how to handle this situation.  I've known Elizabeth for over 17 years and she assisted me with building my first home in Grain Valley MO before she ever became a Realtor.

Elizabeth brings to light an issue that is plaguing all industries today; it is called "Lack of Professionalism".

Thank you for sharing this difficult situation.

Via Elizabeth Cooper-Golden Huntsville AL MLS - (Huntsville Alabama Real Estate, (@ Homes Realty Group)):

A couple of months ago, I had pleasure of selling a home that was not yet on the market, but had a “coming soon” sign.  I called the agent, showed the home and my clients made an offer.

THAT is when Mrs. Agent got her snot on.  First, lecturing me on the value of her listing.  The first words out of her mouth were “Elizabeth, I OWN the upper end market.  This is MY market and I know I priced it right.  You need to tell your buyers to cough up”.   I had to laugh, out loud too!   That remark made me dig my heels in and negotiate all that much harder.  I have done my share of business in “HER” upper end market and am very well aware of market conditions.  I quickly reminded her that my buyer would determine the value of that home and if we came to terms, great.  If not, there was another seller and agent that would appreciate an offer from us.  (We didn’t low ball, by the way).

Mrs. Snot continued to try and play chicken with me throughout the negotiations, insulting me to a point of which I would have taken my buyers elsewhere, if I didn’t have their best interests in mind.  Nasty voice mails dripping with sarcasm, the whole nine yards.  I knew my buyers wanted this home, so I took my verbal beatings with a smile.

We are nearing closing date and the sassy behavior continues.  I called her last week to tie up loose ends and was told “Elizabeth, I am on my way to the beach. I do NOT want to have to deal with this”.  I’m sorry...are you saying you won’t service your clients?

I have been verbally abused, talked down to, ridiculed and called all but stupid.  First, I am FAR from stupid.  Secondly, this is NOT my first rodeo.

What has her attitude done for me?

     1.  I will go out of my way to NOT show her listings, knowing she will make it very difficult for my clients.  Unless I feel it is a perfect match for my buyer, I am steering clear.

    2. I am going to write her a lovely thank you note and let her know I didn’t for one second appreciate her attitude.  I will be professional in my note but let it be known that found I her to be very insulting and unprofessional.

It is so much easier and takes less effort to be kind, not condescending.  We should always be respectful.  As business professionals, it is our job to work towards a common goal...get the job done for our clients.  By acting disrespectfully of your fellow Realtors, you are doing a disservice to your clients...don't you agree?

If I were sporting the same attitude that Mrs. Smarty Pants was, I'd tell her to go pound sand and give her a few other words of encouragement!

I wrote this post 2 weeks ago and never posted it.  SINCE that time, I competed with this agent for a listing in HER market.  MY sign is now in the yard, not hers.  Stick that in your pipe and smoke it Mrs. Personality :)  I hope she brings me a buyer.  Ha!

Once upon a time I decided to start working in local retirement communities. One of the agents pointedly asked me "how did you find buyers for here?" I told her to Google me. I'm the guy at the top of the search results.

Four years later, and I'm now one of the "regulars" ... I list very few in there but listing agents have called me to ask what I thought of their listing price, knowing I know the market as well as they do. Or better.

AMEN, sister!  Wow - this is  so good - and I have thought this very thing so many times.  What be so rude when it takes much less effort (for most people anyway) to be nice?!? I alwasy remember the quote from "Lonesome Dove" where Call says "....I just can't tolerate rude behavior...." - right after he beats the stuffing out of the offender!  Thanks for the post!
