Congress and the President could take a lesson from Realtors

Realtors know that good negotiating skills are required for success and most work hard to hone those skills.  Compromise, in which both sides give up something important and neither is satisfied with the result, isn't the ideal. Instead,  an agreement should be sought that's  satisfactory to all and meets each side's most important goals. (If Republicans' and Democrats' highest goals for the country are mutually exclusive,  however, we have a bigger problem than the debt ceiling.)

To reach a satisfactory agreement, smart Realtors know it's necessary to listen to each other and try to understand the other side's viewpoint .  This isn't happening in Washington; each time a proposal is made, instead of intelligently discussing its merits, the other side  starts throwing insults at the party who made the proposal. This is immature and unproductive behavior that won't solve our country's problems.

Does it ever happen in Washington?  You could not have the nail on the head better than this. Compromise is the key to every business, including politics.

Maybe if enough of us tell our representatives to get serious about the country's issues, they will.

Hi Colleen - I think the real problem is that the goals both sides are persuing here have nothing to do with what the rest of us need - a functioning economy, job security, good education and health care, etc. Give me those and I don't care which side gets elected next year, but keep posturing and avoiding the real issues and I'm gonna get madder than I already am, if that's even possible.

There is a difference between compromise, and consensus.  Compromise is where things are given up which typically festers as a sense of something that was lost.  Consensus is where all parties agree that each side got that which was most important to them, and results in a positive.

I'm with you, Colleen.  Maybe we should start electing Realtors® to office.  A heck of a lot more would get done.
