Remember to Protect Your Pets this Week-end!

As you get ready to enjoy this holiday week-end with friends and family, remember that some of your family members might not find it so enjoyable. Your dogs and cats might find it terrifying.  alert dogs

The sight, sound, and smell of fireworks can set them into a panic. If left outdoors, they can try to run away from it, and subsequently become lost.

When working in animal rescue, I found the week after the 4th of July to be the most heartbreaking, as report after report of lost pets poured in. Sadly, many of those lost pets were never found. When they run from panic, they run too far and can't find their way back. And of course, some get out on highways and get hit.

Remember, pets in a panic will do strange things. One friend of mine lostdog looking out the truck window her dog after leaving her padlocked inside a 6' tall chain link fence. Apparently, she climbed the fence in her effort to get away. She was never found.

So don’t leave your pets outdoors when you leave this week-end, even if you have a tall fence - and don't take them along where you know there will be fireworks unless you know it won’t bother them. (We have one dog who will sleep through it.)

If you’re leaving them home while you go play, make sure they have a safe place to “hide” if things get scary.  Some want to be under a bed or in the back corner of a closet. Some think the bathroom is a safe spot.

dog at restIf you don’t want to leave your dogs in the house when you're not there, put them in the garage. But before you leave, create a “Hidey hole” with a large box they can crawl into or stack boxes around a corner to create a space just big enough to hide in. Include their favorite blanket and/or something of yours to give them the comfort of your scent.

If you know your pets will be afraid, try calming them with Bach Flower Essences. An upscale pet supply store should carry it.

I was just going to write a post about my doggies . . . and the 4th of July.  I'm still going to and will link to yours.

This is so true, Marte....the fireworks can be absolutely unnerving for the poor little (and not so little alike!) puppies~ Have a safe and happy holiday!

As a animal lover, thank you for the post!  So many people forget about pets and terror they feel with fireworks.  I would be heartbroken if mine ran away...and he would if he were outside with the noise!!

Carla - Good. So many new pet owners are unaware of how dogs can panic - and even some who have had pets for a long time might not realize the danger when a new one joins the family.

Our Ralph dog can go along to watch fireworks and not be bothered at all. In fact, he'll get bored and go to sleep. But my old Harry dog would run to hide behind the toilet if he heard a single gunshot. (Not uncommon when you live where people like to target practice.)

I'll be watching for your post!

Faith - Right - size has nothing to do with bravery when it comes to fireworks!

I love fireworks but my Springer Spaniel hates them . We have to make sure he is not alone when they are going off within earshot.

Sherri - Wouldn't it be nice if they understood when we tell them there's nothing to worry about? I'm glad you keep yours safe!

Bruce - Our dogs do their best to protect us - returning the favor is the least we can do!

GOOD MORNING MARTE!  Terrific reminder - we have so many dogs and cats that end up in shelters all weekend long because of fireworks!  I wish, like you, they could understand there is nothing to be afraid of - but we can't and so they run for cover!

And if only humans would think. I know some of the people who lose their dogs just don't care enough to keep them safe. But I've also seen otherwise intelligent people heartbroken because their dog ran off after being left outdoors alone while they went off to celebrate.

I've also witnessed dogs go into uncontrollable panic because people took them along to watch a fireworks display. It didn't matter that their people were there, they just wanted to get away from it.

Excellent tip - and so important for people to understand!  We have had a couple of loud storms this weekend...our otherwise very brave German Shepherd dog, Ilse, whines before they get here - she just does not like thunder.

My husband just suggested we board her while we move in a few weeks...she LOVES where she goes and will be so much more comfortable there until we can get unpacked and make it homey.  Otherwise, she may be terribly disoriented and stressed wondering what on earth is going on.

We owe it to man's best friends to always think of them when making our plans, no matter what they are.

Susan - Yes we do owe it to them. That is so fortunate that Ilse loves the boarding kennel.

She sounds like my neigbor's dog Freckles. We babysit when he is going to be gone all day and can't take her along. When he comes to pick her up she doesn't always want to go home. It's more fun to stay and play with our dogs.
