USS HORNET CELEBRATES FOURTH OF JULY  The USS Hornet will be hosting a 4th of July celebration starting at 1 pm and going to 9 pm on the many decks of the historic aircraft carrier. This event is for the whole family to enjoy.  There will be carnival games, a bounce house for the kids and a live concert that runs from 2 pm to 9 pm. After the concert, guests are invited to remain on board and enjoy a view of Bay Area fireworks from the flight deck.

In additional there will be three decks of the ship to explore, see an exhibit of the Apollo 11 Moon Mission and ride the flight simulator.  The USS Hornet was the prime recovery ship for the Apollo 11 astronauts.  Apollo Moon Mission was the successful landing of men on the moon on July 1969.  The ship was named a national and state historic landmark.  Besides recovering the moon astronauts for their landing in 1969, the Hornet had a distinguished history.  The eight USS Hornets participated in the Revolutionary Wars, in the invasion of the Barbary Coast and was the carrier which launched the Doolittle Raid during the Second World War.

Toni:  I hope some people in my area see my post.  The USS Hornet is a wonderful historical place to visit and seeing fireworks from the top deck should be beautiful.

That must be a really impressive sight in person, gazing up at the huge flag blowing in the wind and the massive ship. Seeing fireworks from the flight deck would be awesome!

Eric:  It's part of our history.  The moon landing and the successful return of the astronauts was a thrilling event.  Too bad you young people don't appreciate and aren't awed by what was done then. The whole world loved us.  It was a good feeling.


John:  The ship is really big with all the smaller aircraft up on the deck it looks massive.  I didn't go to the fireworks display on the Hornet, but I've been told it was very nice.

Larry:  Yes.  The Hornet is quite a ship.  It is huge and gray and has lots of levels, but the history is the important thing.  And did I say it is huge.
