Flashes and Bangs
Utah night noise has changed considerably as citizens prepare to celebrate Independence Day.
A late drive last evening was punctuated by colorful flashes and loud bangs along miles of streets. Suburbs appeared to be in conflict as the noise and sky light moved back and forth across the valley.
Some explosions were accompanied by darting, giggling or shrieking figures, as though youth of all sizes were testing their limits with people in authority.
Home use fireworks appear to be getting more powerful as time goes by. 150 feet into still air seems easy to achieve, and after-shocks following the main burst are ever more complicated, erratic, colorful and noisy.
This is only the start. We can expect beautiful displays, with accompanying oohs and aahs, as planned, formal events take place.
July is an extended gunpowder month in Utah with both Independence Day and Pioneer Day falling within its confines.
Like startled pets, I am always one, after the celebrations, to look forward to the return to evening peace in Utah.
