Mexican White Winged Dove on nest: Mike in Tucson Arizona Mortgage Lender

~ Keep your distance! ~

This mother on her nest is half again the size of the Mourning Doves that you're used to seeing in your neighborhood.  They migrate north from Mexico and nest in the Arizona-Sonoran Desert.

This one has found a location where the spines of the saguaro cactus protect her from reptile predators.  Notice the featherless blue skin around the striking orange eye.  You can't see it in this photo, but the leading edges of her wings are white.

That dove is definitely in a very protected area, isn't she?  Pretty smart.  Won't get may preditors stealing her eggs.

Mike I would never have thought that a bird would make a nest in a cactus, but it makes perfect sense after reading your blog.

It's truly amazing on how a bird can nest in a citrus.

Mike - One thing I love about AR is folks sharing their little corner of the world. It's nice to get away for a few seconds to view others hometowns. Thanks for sharing! Happy 4th of July!

Mike - great picture of wildlife and I am always amazed at the was wildlife takes advantage of natural defenses. I never would have thought about the reptiles being a risk to the doves and her nest.

Larry,

Our state bird, the Cactus Wren, also builds her nest amid the sharp spines of desert cactus.  Thanks for commenting.

Mike: How awesome.. If funny how the bird can find comfort in the most awkward places.
