Even though stagers may not has a dramatic impact as an architect & a real estate developer who can influence the making of a house directly, there are still a few ways that we can contribute to make it a greener & better world by advising the clients to do some of these things in a selling process:

  1. Paint the home with eco-friendly paint:
I am a big fan of Benjamin Moore’s Aura line. Great colors, long-lasting, coats dry within the hour (saves time & labor costs), and eco-friendly. Not to mention very minimal odor which is great for both the people who apply the paint, and people who live in the environment. Price is also great, even beats the always cheap Kelly Moore (which I don’t personal like since the paint feels watered down).

  2. Decrease the volume of trash in landfill:

one man’s (or woman’s) trash is another’s treasure. Freecycle is solely based on this idea and to decrease the size of our landfills. You can post what you need or what you no longer need on FreeCycle message boards and within a hour (or a day at most) you will get your wish fulfilled!

First impressions for houses just like interviews for a job.  You only get one chance.

Cindy- Great post!  Benjamin Moore's Aura line is GREAT!  And, of course freecycle, freecycle, freecycle!

We are huge consumers with all the furniture, art & accessories purchased for this job.  My assistant and I try to make sure to separate all the cardboard & other recyclable materials.  The cardboard gets picked up curbside in my neighborhood every other week (plastic, etc on the opposite week).  The bags, since they usually aren't recycleable with average plastic products, we take to Publix (our local grocery store) where they have a plastic bag recycle bin.  More than 50% of the waste my family goes through does in fact end up in the recylcle piles vs the garbage can.  Clothes, toys, etc are always donated.

It always upsets me to see cardboard in my neighbors garbage can, or less than a small recycle buckets worth of plastic, glass & veggie cans every 2 weeks (and those are the few that do recycle).  You wouldn't think it would be so difficult to wake up and understand that we are trying to make a small difference & it is EASY!

Gotta keep banging the drum, Cindy.  Being green is certainly a trend these days, but we must always strive to do better.  Thanks for perpetuating the message, which is near and dear to my heart.

    Cheers!! from DC...
