Spent countless hours with remote assistance techs who were trying to find the root cause of problems on my computer.

They finally gave up....and echoed the age-old solution: REFORMAT YOUR DRIVE!

Big sigh.....

Backed up documents...

Made sure I have all the CDs, I need to reformat and reinstall...

With a heavy heart, I initiated the reformatting...

Then reinstalled...

WTF? The network card wasn't found.

Using another computer, downloaded all the drivers I can find, saved them on an external drive, reinstalled them on my now dead computer. Still no go.

Other techies try....error messages. Network card not found, not installed.

Fortunately, I have an extended warranty. And Dell will send tech to install new motherboard.

In the meantime, I'm grateful I have access to another computer, an external drive, and an ipad. So I am not completely out of the tools I need for work.

God help those who don't have a back up computer in situations like this.

Pacita - That's great advice! Backing up data always seems like overkill...until you have a meltdown. With the huge capacity external hard drives available these days, it's relatively simple to create a complete back-up image of your computers system drive. It's so true when they say 'an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure'. Thanks for sharing.

I hear you, Pacita.

For years I worked on "1 Computer".   A Virus or a Crash would put me out of business for days... I had to go to the Public Library, or Kinko's, or somewhere else to use or rent a very insecure computer, until the Geek Squad or Up and Running could get my busted computer fixed.

Today I use 2 Laptops, plus Mobile (Blackberry), and I have 2 Desktops for Backup.

Pacita...

It can be so frustrating ... all those hours spent without success. I hope that your computer is up and running soon.

Good to have two hard drives in tandem...or a link to the clouds.

Pacita - It is important to have a backup computer, in case the computer working on does not function. Thank you for the detailed quality blog.

John --- I've slowly migrated to gmail and starting to use other means for saving docs ... The less I have on the computer the less vulnerable I feel.

 Jim --- iCloud it is...soon!

Richard --- I don't feel so helpless since I have my Passport backup drive....limited things I can do on IPad but at least I'm functional. Thank goodness wee have an extra laptop at home and a desktop at work...and I have an iPhone and iPad....

Fred ---- almost ditto.

David --- fortunately back up drives are now available with huge capacity in a pocket size

John --- absolutely necessary to have a back up, and a fallback plan, each and every time.
