Like most dogs, my sweet dog Peanut has freakish phobias. She's fine with thunder and lightening, but put her in a room with a balloon of any sort and you've got "skulky" dog as we like to call it. Don't even think about testing your smoke detectors with her in the house. When the battery starts chirping, this dog will bolt up into our bed shaking like leaves on a tree.
I don't know what made me start doing this a few years ago, but when we would leave for fireworks watching, I would close the door that led to our doggie door to keep sweet Peanut inside the home. I don't know how she will react to the hiss, hum, and banging of fireworks. I don't want to find out the hard way that she gets freaked out and tries to escape.
We happened to see the result of a scared dog last year on our way back from the fireworks. A beautiful black dog, someone's pet and best friend, was hit in the middle of a busy highway. I imagine that poor baby was spooked and didn't know what to do except run.
So do yourself and your pet a favor and keep it locked inside your home when you leave to go watch the festivities on the 4th. That dog wasn't even mine and I still think about it almost every time I drive by the scene.
Be safe and protect everyone, including your pets!
