July 4th Weekend at the Cashtown Inn

Every year at this time the quiet hills of Cashtown Pa just outside of Gettysburg are engulfed in the cadence of Fife & Drum. It has become tradition for  Confederate reenactors to inhabit the Inn during the anniversary of the Battle of Gettysburg and fill the night air with the sounds of 1863.

The historic Cashtown Inn built in 1797 was originally built as a stage stop and began serving the southern Pa area as an Inn and Tavern in 1815. The Inn got it's name from the requirement of first Innkeeper Peter Mack who demanded cash payment only for his goods and services.

During the Battle of Gettysburg the Cashtown Inn severed as headquarters for Confederate Generals A.P Hill, John D Imboden, and Henry Heth. General  R.E. Lee ordered his troops concentrated at Cashtown , Innkeeper at the time Jacob Mickley boasted that "the entire force under Lee passed within twenty feet of my bedroom.

The Inn itself was used more recently by Ted Turner for the movie epic depicting the 3 day Battle of Gettysburg. The Inn as well as the grounds appear in the movie. The main entry room on the first floor of the Inn is filled with photos of the actors that appeared in the film and used the Inn temporary lodging during the shoot.

Today the Cashtown Inn has been transformed into a first class Bed & Breakfast with a full service Tavern as well as a fine dining restaurant.
