Rock On- The days of old

Rock On-

Today I was going through some of my old stuff and I came across an old photo of me when I was playing with the Ronnie James Group.

Ronnie James Group

Funny photo from back in the day

I played with the two gents (back row) to the left (my right in the photo) for many years. We all started a group together in the 70’s in high school called Expozure. We wrote and recorded the equivalent of about 15 to 20 albums of material, between 150 and 200 songs.

In those days we recorded on an Ampex 2” tape machine (it was from A&M records). We had a friend that had a mobile recording studio that we did the majority of our recording with. Our first recording with him came after he had done a live recording of Loverboy in Canada.

Today it has all changed and musicians can produce better recordings than we produced in their bedrooms using a computer.

We had moments that we were close to making something out of ourselves but just flirted with notoriety. It is a tough business and you have to be in the right place at the right time and be properly prepared to take advantage of the opportunity when it knocks.

Now I go through streaks of picking up my babies and playing with long interludes of them being ignored. I get a call once in a while to play with a friend doing some blues and traditional rock but my skills have slipped horribly.

Little older, wider and shorter hair

Hey Dude,

That is pretty kool. So iI was thinking about starting a group. Maybe we can call it the Inspectors Four. Or maybe Five, or Six Hundren if we get enough guys. We can sing the Real Estate Blues. I'm sure we can get a gig right here at Inspection News!

Think of all the girls we could get !!!

Jeremy,

Yeah, that was pretty much my life from the later 70's to the 90's. It is funny how you see yourself then and now.

Steve, We could be the HI- 600, Supergroup ; ) I have playing many funny parties like that. Some of the best gigs were like that. Low key and a free for all!

Emily, Thank you, I used to think of myself in those terms but that has all faded.

They really were my babies. Thats why I can not get rid of them. I still have around 6 guitars. They are the last vestiges of all the equipment I used to own. I used to have my own PA system, lighting, staging and a 18' bed freight truck to haul it all.

I was very popular when friends wanted to move ; )

I may have to post some other funny pic's from the past, I do have a lot of them. Lots of hair in those days.

I don't remember the group you were in but I used to be a rock and roll DJ--on the radio, in clubs.  Some wonderful and wild times back then.  Maybe I should post a picture on my AR blog!

Mary,

You most likely would not of heard of us since the albums were all on tape and never went to press. We did get a little radio in Oregon, but very, very little.

We really had all the songs "in the can" as they say so if we got signed we could pull from a reservoir of songs to get us through a couple albums as we matured as writers.

We had to write 10 songs in a week once for a guy who was making a movie. This was all right before the whole thing fell apart. That is the way it goes in the biz.

I was not the main writer. It was our guitar player who was a very gifted individual. He, the keyboardist and I worked very well together and could rough out a song in a fairly quick time.

Nice Rick. I play guitar, but never on that level. I play in spurts these days, going for some time without playing, then a regular for a while. Life has changed. Do you still have any of your old recordings?

Jim,

Thanks, Yeah that is my main baby. I played it so much I wore through the finish with my fingers in several areas.

As for recordings most of them are on 2" tape and the machines to play them are getting hard to find. I had some recording on cassettes but they have started to fade. I have some videos also that are pretty comical. What cheesy crap we were doing back then. But that was in the very beginning of video at a medium for bands.

The worst part of it was our manager was playing producer to help save money and he really was not that good so some of the recording mixes are not very good by a professional standard. The main objective was to get a lot of studio time and get the songs on tape knowing we would re-record them if we got signed.

We had a few times that we were close to signing deals but something bizarre would happen and things would fall a part. It really is a finicky business.

I really was not the greatest musician and had to work very hard to keep up with some of the guys I was playing with. I was lucky to able to play with some very talented players.
