Of all the athletes in the world to whom children might turn as role models, as ideals, as men and women of admirable character, as accomplished humans you have chosen Michael Vick to represent you. We understand your motive is, of course, financial; this was not a decision born of charity for an unfortunate felon of no means. We understand your expectation is to reap commensurate reward for the money expended on this investment, anticipation of public appreciation that his name is on some products and they will, as a result, flock to purchase them thereby filling your corporate pockets. You are, after all, in business to make money. But we in the animal welfare community as well as very many mere mortals graced with compassion and a sense of fairness not only protest this choice, but revile it. You need see only look at this one of the many, many photos of the maimed, torn, fatally injured, profoundly injured, utterly devastated dogs that received these bloody gifts at the hands of Michael Vick to appreciate the horror. This man is not a psychopath who actually lacks the knowledge of right and wrong, but an arrogant being completely devoid of empathy, whose sense of entitlement and belief in his own dominion allowed him to murder live animals for sport and entertainment. You may wish to argue he has served his sentence, been reborn and now sees the light to which we say, "not even remotely credible, not even remotely acceptable." The only light he has seen is that of the cameras now scrutinizing his every move and private life, scanning for any indication of his current proclivities,  He was caught and is now, not an enlightened man, just a more deceptive, cautious one, presenting an image of contrition. We do not denigrate his sports talent, only his hypocrisy, as we do yours. Nike is not the only rapacious entity to turn a blind eye to the blatant anti-social antics of superstars; in this particular case the NFL is equally guilty. Your greed makes you equally culpable and cowardly; you will rationalize anything in the name of profit and reframe it with eloquent press releases. The truth is you do not have the courage to take the high road and call this what it is: a phony campaign to cleanse a filthy truth. You value money above your opportunity to use the profound platform given you to provide a genuine role model for young minds: yourself. You can so greatly advance the cause of animal welfare by using your voice, your products, your power in their service, by doing what is right, what is socially conscious, what is truly important.  Please show the entire world you value life above lucre and send a message that resonates across the planet: animals matter, kindness matters, sacrifice matters.  Fire Michael Vick.  less

Since leaving prison Michael Vick has done more to help dogs than you ever have or will do in  your lifetime.  By protesting and rallying against Vick you aren't being an advocate of dogs.  Speaking against animal abuse has become a daily part of Vick's life and he is the most famous and visible champion for their cause right now.  You need to decide why you're doing this.  Is it because you hate Mike Vick or because you love dogs?  If it's the latter,  re-allocate this energy towards doing something positive for them.

Dear Brown,  I have know idea where you get the thought that Michael Vick speaks against animal abuse as a daily part of his life.  As far as the little speaking he does, His talk is cheap and what he did to his fighting dogs is unforgivable, these dogs suffered severely both at the hands of Vick and sponsored by Vicks money.  I have been working with abused animals since the age of 8 and 24 years later continue to do so on a daily basis as well as donate 10% of my earnings back to animal welfare. So I beg your pardon when you make such an uneducated statement as you did in the first Sentence of your comment.  Michael Vick is not a role model, he is an animal abuser who committed criminal acts, that is a FACT! My energy will stay right where is it, working to educated people like you about the truths and hoping that you look past what the media feeds you on the surface.  If you think that Michael Vick is admirable in any way, then you and I will have to agree to disagree.  I always appreciate alternate points of view, however this is one case that I feel there is NO middle ground on.  Criminals and abusers are NOT role models. - Tara Stone

Way to go Tara! Where does Brown get off saying that Michael Vick has done more to help dogs after he abused and killed them? Anyone who truly cared about animals would NEVER hurt them. Vick only speaks against animal abuse because he got caught and is trying to rebuild his reputation, plain and simple! There is NO forgiveness for animal abusers and I hope there's a special place in hell for him.

In a recent interview, Vick was asked what he would change if he could go back.....and all he said was that he would shorten his time in prison.  NOT "I wouldn't abuse the dogs" but less time being punished for his crimes.  That speaks volumes right there - you can't believe anything he says when he speaks against abuse....

The Lost Dogs by Jim Gorant should be a mandatory read by every Vick supporter before they are allowed to speak...Thank you, Tara!

Great Comments Everyone, I really appreciate you taking the time to voice your thoughts for the animals that suffer in silence.

I do think his speaking may actually impact him in the long run. At least that is my hope. I'm a therapist, so I always have to hope that change is possible. Also, as a therapist, I know changing from an animal abuser, especially if one was an adult as old as Vick was at the time (past the point where the frontal lobe continues to develop), it is extremey unlikely. If his speaking stops one person, great. If it begins to sink into him, sort of "fake it til you make it," great. And, if he was truly remorseful, he would indeed be a powerful speaker and actor against animal cruelty. However, that day is yet to come, if ever.

What would change look like? Not publicity driven speaches. It would first entail actually acknowleding what he did admitting he was a monster and got a "rush" off of doing harm. It would involve some mention of the dogs themselves and recognition of their suffering. Shame would be a good indicator. He would express remorse not for getting caught or letting his family down or any of that, but for the very real pain and suffering he caused those dogs. He would acknowledge that this was something he directed. He was the one who would not let his friends/family find homes for the dogs not good at fighting but instead destroy them in very cruel ways. He would not spend his time and efforts on this huge publicity thing he is on UNLESS that was raising money for dogs. He has plenty to send his kids to college and take care of himself and his family. He needs to be giving a significant amount of all the money he is reaping to animal charities, particularly those that cared and still care for the surviving dogs. He'd give far and beyond any court appointed expenses. He'd go the the district attorney, federal authorities, etc, and tell everything he knows about every dog fighting ring. He'd tell about the connect between dog fighting and college football, about how dog fighting is there in professinal football as well. He'd give the name of every person who ever attended a fight to authorities. He's explain every other operation he knows about, cause let's face it, he has significant knowledge of that world. When he has begun to do these things, I will begin to watch to see if there is true remorse. It is very unlikely, although not impossible, that he could change. But, the signs of that change are much more than just giving speeches and making sure that is covered.

As for "doing more for dogs" that writee has no clue what animal rescue people actually do. I am in awe of them. I am not in awe of Mr. Vick. At all.

You are totally right Tara! @ Brown, How arrogant of you thinking we don't do anything else. You don't know what we do and you don't need to know either. WE ARE THE VOICE of those that cannot speak for themselves. And you are NOBODY, to tell us if we should reallocate our efforts. WE KNOW WHY WE ARE FIGHTING FOR and putting Michael "Dogs Killer" Vick as an advocate for Dogs is adding insult to injury. Go to a shelter, check on what is going on with the dogs in general, educated yourself first, check your facts. But I guess you are one if his fans! BTW, I work with abused animals, so I KNOW WHAT I AM TALKING ABOUT.

Thanks Tara! It makes me sick how somepeople think he's fine because he did a VERY LITTLE bit of time. He has only "changed" to get his job back and speaks to make himself look better. He shows no sign of remorse. Lets take all the Nike sponsership money and donate it to animal charities...theres a good START. Then actually get some help. I believe in 2nd chances, but we are seriously talking Jeffery Dahlmer here...just with dogs. The man is sick! Normal people don't do this! Crawl out from under your rock people! ANd thanks again Tara, good job!

    Hi Tara

You really doing great work, keep it up. Vick will never be a spokesperson for dogs, he is just keeping his appearences up because he got caught, if not he would still be doing the dog fighting.
