When I was 10 years old my Mother and my two brothers took a trip to Washington D.C. We rode a Greyhound bus from New York and stayed at the Shoreham hotel which was pretty swanky compared to the places where we usually stayed. We went to all the requisite places, sat in the balcony and watched the Senate, met our Congresswoman, did the FBI tour and of course the Smithsonian. The night before we left we sat on the lawn in front of the Washington Monument and watching the fireworks on the Fourth of July. Yes it looked just like the picture only more intense and to a 10 year old girl all the history and meaning of America was burned into my mind at that quintessential moment. It was spell binding.
I have seen many Fourths and many fireworks in my life but this one was the most memorial and most important... I became a patriot that day!
