I would love to be the queen of that castle. If those walls could talk, I'd take the days or weeks off to listen! I admit, this piece of Real Estate is far away from our turfs, but that doesn't make it less intriguing.
It's one of those rough gems that is just begging for attention, and if only I could I'd love to give that and then some. Everytime we visit my family in Germany, we walk around the castle in awe and dream of all the things we would do. We can actually see it from the window of my old bedroom. Think Bed & Breakfast... wedding venue... museum..
The castle - Schloss Hohenthurm - was built in the 18th century but the tower which sits right outside its grounds and the fortress it was part of date, back to the year 936. It was orginially erected as a stronghold against the Slavic peoples.
The church still holds regular services and the tower is open to the public about twice a year. The castle, however, is strictly off limits. For years it's been changing hands at auctions and all that is known about the current owners is that they had big plans. Sadly, other than blocking access to the cobblestone driveway leading up the gates and taking down some trees in the garden, nothing has been done.
And if its age, history and architecture wasn't enough, it even comes with its very own ghosts - take a close look at the window on the left. What? You don't believe me? Then you may just have to hop on a plane and see for yourself!
Unfortunately, there are no 18th century castles for sale in central Maryland but if you are searching for a unique piece of Real Estate in Montgomery, Howard or Anne Arundel County, MD, I would love to help you find it!
