Are You PURPLE Yet?

Best Real Estate Web Site - Search Engine Placement - How To Get A Real Estate Web Designer Who can Change Your World

If you HOLD your BREATH until you TURN PURPLE, will you sell more real estate?

Probably not, but you never know...  Wink

Where am I going with this?  I am trying to help you make an extra $10,000 to $50,000.  Would that work for you?  What would 5 extra deals be worth from a web site that REALLY WORKED better?

What does this have to do with BEING PURPLE?  Every great blog post needs a cool "lead in" or angle -  and this single blog post is pretty great because it can change your life.  Not sure about that?  Read on!

In this post we will discuss how to stand out, or be a PURPLE COW.  Why?  Because people would go to a lot of effort and expense to SEE one if one could be found.  If your web site was the equal of a purple cow, being unusual and "out"standing in its field, then people might go to a lot of effort and expense to see it, use it, become your client.

The concept of PURPLE COW Marketing was made famous by Seth Godin, Marketing Guru, who said to succeed, a marketer has to be DIFFERENT.  Seth has made about a billion dollars teaching top marketers to  avoid following the crowd, don't be like others, if we want to succeed.  The theory is based on his TWIST on the famous Gelett Burgess Poem, PURPLE COW.

So, without further ado....  do you remember the nursery rhyme poem?

I never saw a purple cow
I never hope to see one
But I can tell you anyhow
I would rather see than be one

The poet would rather "see than be one..."  But our marketing guru wants to be the purple cow so that everybody wants to see him.  There's the twist of genius.

What does this mean to you?  Well, if a guy like Seth Godin can take a very old poem and make a billion dollars off of it, then maybe we would want to know what else he has to say?  On the subject of web marketing, he says, ( here I summarize) at his blog

  #  Fire the Committee, no great web site was ever built by more than 3 people.

  #  Trust Your Gut

  #  If you want to stand out hire a designer.  Hire a ROCK STAR instead of a "good" designer.

Seth Godin goes on to say,

"10 mediocre website consultants working in perfect harmony can't do the work of one rock star.".

I love it!  No disprespect to template site providers, as some like P2 do a MUCH better than average job, or even a superb job, but template sites JUST DON'T CUT IT unless you customize them.

I have instinctively known this for a long time, even though it no longer pays to build a real estate web site from the ground up...  In spite of some glowing reports from some P2 members about how their template sites produce results....  I admire and respect the programming that goes into the drip email thing, and all the functionality built into the best template sites.  I don't want to program that stuff to be hacker and cracker proof,  But great BEHIND THE SCENES functionality is not enough.  The sites must LGeekedGeekedK DIFFERENT if they are going to work....

Now, even though Godin is a HUGE GURU type, and he has made billions of dollars for being a marketing genious, I actually am PURPLE ENOUGH to question Seth's statement...  for all of....  a few minutes.

Then realized, my own web sites are LIVING PURPLE PROOF that he is right.  My main real estate web site produces 2000 visitors a month, and about 100 leads, (this is at least 10 times better than the average Toledo Realtor).  My own SEO work on this site and nearly a dozen doorway sites has produced triple the visitor traffic I experienced a year ago.  The first web site I ever designed produced trafic of over 2000 people a day by CHANGING THE INTERACTION (one of Seth's principles for success).  One of my hobby sites is currently managing 5000 visitors a day with never a single dime paid for advertising : )

Back To Real Estate, where I was once spending $3000 a month on print advertising in local newspaper, to drive buyers to my web site (oh it worked, but not like the 600 visitors a month I got recently from NATURAL PAGE 1 SERP at GOOGLE and YaHOO...  The rest came from doorway sites and other methods.

Now...  I often used to see myself as another good but starving web designer or dotcom casualty turned Realtor because I would not relocate to Chicago or New York.  Believe me, there are more than a few of us....  But now I have a new identity.... Thanks to SETH GODIN!

So, yes... compliments of Seth Godin, I can swell my head to a whole new level and say

Star Cool Star    I AM A ROCK STAR!   Star Cool Star

Of course, even with a clever Seth Godin Lead in, or Endorsement, it would NOT be a good thing if I were the only one who thought this was true.  See http://www.myrealcoach.com/ to see what others have said about me.

As you will see, my coaching clients report large increases in traffic, lead generation, and visitor conversion.  I promise you that there has never been a committee involved in my coaching or web designs.  I learned a long time ago that I don't get along with committees Tongue Tied.

Can  you believe the arrogance and braggadocio I am displaying?  By now at least some of YOU are TURNING PURPLE,  or wishing I would TURN PURPLE - Maybe even hold my breath, turn purple, and Drop Dead? Not a chance!  Stick out tongue

You don't have to hire me as your rock star designer, and maybe you should not, but you should probably hire somebody if you are not getting thousands of visitors, hundreds of leads, and lots of web initiated deals.

If you want to snag 5 extra deals next year (DO THE MATH - WHAT'S THAT WORTH?), then maybe you should select a provider from the P2 preferred provider list and TURN YOUR WEB SITE PURPLE!

Hi Lonn: Here's one of the things I was wondering about. When I go to a website that is filled from top to bottom with text, and keywords, and it's just so "busy" looking...I wonder about the user friendliness for the customer. Sure, you get the hits and the leads, but a site like that just isn't pretty. How can someone create a site that is different, yet not so wordy, and yet pretty?

Lonn I wonder the same thing as kelly. I hate seeing all that text and while I may click on the site because it's high up in rankings I do not stay because it's too busy. Is there anything I can do with a pretty site to help raise it's ranking? Also I love your commercial on your page.

Kelly:  I will start and end my comment with the same phrase....  Balance is good!

Writing for search engines produces sentences humans don't want to read.  The result can fail to engage.  Wondering, is my site at www.DuganSells.com guilty of being too "busy" by your definition?  It is possible to make the top pretty, and bury some of the keywords and content bait underneath the graphics.  You said something interesting though....  You said, "Sure you get the hits and the leads.... BUT".  Kelly - if a web site is producing leads then where is the BUT???

If you make a site that is "not so wordy" there will be less content, and CONTENT is king if you want free traffic from natural search engine placement.  Balance is good!

Heather:  You can add content to that pretty site, even if "below the fold" but if you want free traffic from search engines, then do pay attention to the first 10 words on the page and get them above the images....

Thanks, Lonn. Yes, I do think your site is busy. But, I do know that is what gets results. I just want a site that is both pretty (not so wordy/busy) and works. The balance, as you say. Is that possible? Anyway to "hide" that mountain of text?

Kelly:  If you hide the mountain of text, as you call it, then the search engines won't see the content and you won't get free visitors.

PROOF OF "PURPLE COW" or "ROCK STAR" STATUS:

Please remember I am doing this in Toledo Ohio not Chicago, Not East Coast, etc.  Our average house price is about $100,000 and our market size and activity are LOW compared to most every other area in USA right now.

My main site and doorway sites are ranked on Page #1 at Google and Yahoo for the best search terms.

My real estate web site at www.DuganSells.com is ranked in top 1000 real estate web sites in the world by one of the largest realtor web providers.  It was ranked #1 in each of two states where I work, Ohio and Michigan, earlier this year.  It is still #1 in each county or city where I work.

This is last week's report, with 400 visits and 15 prospects created.  See the PAGE VIEWS at over 1000. That proves people LIKE reading all that CONTENT : )

Very engaging post.  I find that most of my time lately is taken up with website building/optimization.  I may call you to discuss some options.

Seth:  Thanks for the compliment.  Most any Real Estate Coach will tell you, as Seth Godin said, that good marketing is worth a lot more than mediocre marketing.

I confess in advance, that I am no Seth Godin or Mike Ferry, but my rates are a lot lower than theirs so it works out just fine ; )

Would be glad to discuss options.  For real estate coaching topics, SEO, web design, and testimonials, See also http://www.MyRealCoach.com

Lonn - Congrats on your super success with your web site.  I am also a huge fan of Seth Godin and I have read all his books and I am excited to see him in Las Vegas next month.  I read "The Dip" in the last 2 weeks and I really enjoyed it.

I am trying some of the things I have read about (many from you) for the last couple years. I am already seeing some improved traffic.

I used to do html programming, back in the age of dinosaurs, about the time Compuserve went away. It is like learning things all over again now. Amazing how quickly things have changed.

On to the next idea...

Sam:  Thanks for comment, yes Seth is great and his books are good food for your marketing brain!

Seth is great, but the average realtor cannot afford him ; )

That's where people like you and I come in as helpers or coaches : )

I offer as much free help and support and helpful articles, eBooks, etc as I can.

Do you coach, Sam?
