You didn't work on July 4th?

In just reading Phil's last post, in which he mentions that someone was complaining he didn't return a call from Friday night to Saturday on a Holiday weekend.....I was inspired (and who wouldn't be!) it made me think of this morning... I was invited into someone's home for a listing presentation.... I mentioned in passing that since the office was closed yesterday, I did something for me.. I went to the local Humane Society to help clean out the dog cages for a little while thinking they would be short-staffed as it was a holiday...  "Oh", the wife said "You don't work full-time?"  Why is it that we are not allowed to mention a child's baseball game, or that we do something for ourselves on a National Holiday?

I still had the emergency call on the way to the Humane Society from a client (it wasn't), still spent 3 hours later on the internet....but my goodness - we should not have to feel the need to apologize....doing human things keeps us human, and better to serve your needs! I hope everyone had a great 4th of July...

New Rochelle is GREAT!

Gay- I wonder what they would say about the Saturday's and Sunday's as well as evenings you work showing property... holding a house open.... writing a contract?

Hi Kathy: I erally think that they feel it is open time and so better they than someone else utilizes that time ... sort of like first come first serve.. forgetting we have a life.. I love helping people, but it is also nice to be appreciated..

You should not have to apologize or feel guilty about taking time off for a holiday.  You do have to do things that you enjoy.

Gay, that's a great idea!  Glad you were able to help out, and the puppy sure looks like it enjoyed seeing you.

I took the 4th off, but was a little bit thinking about work.  We've had such a busy time, that I've still got so much to do!  But I'm getting better at time off...still working on it!

Gay,

This is a topic that frustrates me to no ends. I had a client calling from out of country over the weekend, but leaving no number for me to call him back. In his last message he commented about not having any luck reaching me. Gee....really?  He's on vacation, but I shouldn't be.

I've gotten where I tell people that I am just like everyone else. I like to spend the holidays with my family too.

(I did work some this weekend, negotiating an offer. Under Contract! Hooray!)

I know sometimes people just don't get it.  I got an email from someone complaining they hadn't heard from us (and it was nasty).  Of course, we had called and emailed (and they didn't see),but it really ruined my July 4th.  I was tempted to write something nasty back on the email, but instead I said, "We'll call you on Tues morning and enjoy the rest of this lovely weekend."

Oh, my, were you eavesdropping on a conversation I had today with another agent?  LOL  This is soooo true!  We have become victims of this adult-ADD society, where everything has to be done RIGHT NOW or you will lose the business!   Ha!

Gay....this is so refreshing to read.  We are always expected to be "on".  When I have a family obligation that conflicts (like watching a game) I usually just say that I have another appointment - as somehow it is okay to have another business commitment but not a family commitment.

Gay - Love this post and the comments--we deserve a little personal time.  I returned a call within the hour regarding a property and the caller told me I should get a cell phone so I could return calls sooner...hello, it was 7:30pm and I was having dinner with a friend.  I returned the call at 8:15pm.  Yes, we do eat and sleep.

It’s funny how people have their own definition of full-time, and when we are working for them, that definition means 24/7! Ha!
