Save On Your Summer Electric Bill in Williamson County

Electric BillThe heat of summer is here and air conditioning units are running what seems to be around the clock here in the Austin area. In an effort to keep cool, the energy bills usually take a big hit on the budget during the summer months. If you are looking for a way to save money on your energy bills for years to come, consider planting trees in your yard. Trees that are placed properly in your yard can save you up to 30%, according to U.S Forest Service Center for Urban Forest Research.

Trees are the perfect thing to provide natural cooling shades in summer and to block those blistery cool winds of winter. Not only are trees great for helping to save on energy bills, they also do a lot to help the environment with pollution. Take for instance the city of Chicago. There are over 3.6 million trees in the city, and they help reduce over 890 tons of pollution each year. The Forest Service estimates that this saves everyone $6.4 million.

Nice large mature trees help sell homes too. A study in Portland, Oregon found that trees that grew in front of a home added on average $8,870 to the home's value and those homes spent less time on the market for sale.

If you choose to plant a tree, place a deciduous tree on the east and west sides of your home to help keep it cool in the summer, and to allow sunlight in during the winter. Both of these benefits will reduce energy use, in turn lowering your electric bills.

Properly placing a tree is key. Not only to save utilities, but to not effect the foundation or sewer lines.

When it gets over 90 it is hard to imagine that a tree will do much.

Thanks for the post. Trees do help cool down the my house during the hot summer month. If shades the windows from direct sun coming in to the bedrooms. Those rooms are always cooler. The den is not shaded and is always the hotest.

Believe it or not, trees really do help, even if it is 90 degrees. Plus they just make you feel better!
