GIZMODO issued a warning today to remind VERIZON customers that after July 7, 2011 --- VERIZON will be discontinuing the unlimited data plans for smartphones. Measured service only from then on forward. That leaves only SPRINT with unlimited data -- at $70/mo. AT&T only offers measured service already. T-Mobile? Both metered service and the possibility it may "disappear" into another carrier.

The data plans for tablets are structured as measured service already. If you haven't decided which tablet to get yet, the deadline won't make you rush over to Verizon. We are talking about smart phone data service here.

Some folks who think they have unlimited data service now may be very surprised. Verizon is going after the datahogs on its system. In another GIZMODO post, more information is available about Verizon's measures against the heavy users.

PS I must admit --- I love the smartphone I have! Very convenient and very useful - even has GPS in it. More apps are available than any one person could ever use and lots are free or less than $5.

Hi Lynn, A very good post and reminder for people to check this out. I have the unlimited data plan with AT&T ( grandfathered in). But for the iPad, it is the measured service as you mentioned.

What many need to better understand is how data is measured and what it all means to them. My understanding is that streaming videos, games and movies on any mobile devise uses a lot of data. In the measured plan, this is where a person that uses a lot, will pay a lot. For real estate, there is not much need for all that ( entertainment) so just about any plan will be work for us. Using the Internet and searching for property or using apps to do that, or to write notes, keep files or check e-mail, uses very little data in comparison to the streaming videos. If a person spends their day on You Tube, they will be using a lot of data.

What exactly does "2" get you? Not an easy question to get answered by the cell phone companies. Your comment indicates that if one is WORKING and not watching videos, gaming or streaming, a lower amount monthly should suffice.
