Federal Pacific Electrical Panels - Information that could save your life.

federal pacific electrical panelWas your home built sometime between 1950 and 1980? Do you have a Federal Pacific Electric Company panel? Chances are likely that you do, since Federal Pacific was the leading manufacturerer during that time span., installing over a million panels.  However, there is much scutiny where the Federal Pacific panels are concerned. Although, they have never been recalled, the specific "Stab-Lok" line has proven to be a latent hazard, leading to electrical failure, arcing and fire. Even though the Government has pulled their UL rating, some experts now say that Federal Pacific Electric Comapny panels can appear to work fine for years. The problem is that just one overcurrent can cause complete failure or fire. Also, it has been documented that other issues such as entire panel and panel-bus fires have occurred.

Due to the hazards, homes with these panels should be checked out by a qualified electrical contractor to determine what the next step should be. More than likely they will advise you to eliminate the Federal Pacific Electric panel and upgrade to something newer. In some areas of the US, insurance companies will not cover the home if it has this panel installed.  For more information regarding Federal Pacific Electric Company panels or hazards check out this website:http://www.inspectapedia.com/fpe/fpepanel.htm.

Good info.  I am a broker, but I also own an electrical contracting company.  In the early 70s the Federal Government gave FP a chance to fix their fire problem.  Which they didn't.  The Feds shut them down.  I had a customer have his meter disconnect blow on New Years day last year when his stove shorted out and didn't blow the FP breaker in the subpanel.  Thank God he had a Square D disconnect beside his meter.  His house would have likely burned.  We changed both subpanels within a week.

Hi David & Bonnie - Good info. This is a frequent and no longer surprising inspection issue here - we have seen several dozen replaced, and we have started to look at electrical panels before we list, just to make the seller is aware of a potential problem. A couple of them replaced them before listing but after talking to an electrician.

I have seen a few of these but I do make it a point to look every time I view an older home. Thanks for getting the word out as I know these are still out there!

Over the years, following a home inspection, we have had 2 of these panels replaced by sellers.  It's quite costly, but necessary.

Hi David & Bonnie - This is good information, I'll be on the look-out for these panels. I'm assuming the "Stab-Lok" panel looks like the one in your post that is having the issues, or is it all of Federal Pacific Panels?

This is 100% accurate. We have had two instances where a Federal Pacific Stab Lok was flagged in an inspection and they had to be replaced. No arguments, it is a fact.

We've run into these panels in at least one condo building in this area and were advised about the potential problems.  Interesting to note, that of the 400 or so panels, none have failed or caused any fires in the 40 plus years they've been installed.

I have run into these several times over the years. I think in only one case did the buyer require a change before closing.

Dave and Bonnie - We have one of these in one of our listings currently. We do run into them on occasion. Always shows up in an inspection report and tends to be a credit at closing around here. Just our experience.
