Distod3_2

Matt Johnson of www.lasermeters.com and ww.appraiserdepot.com has announced the introduction of yet another product to the Leica line of laser measuring devices.

The new DISTO™ D3 is a multi-functional "pocketable" measuring device with an integrated tilt sensor and a lighting detector that automatically switches on the display and keypad illumination.  THAT should help when working in those dark REO properties!

Matt Johnson says: Once the price is finalized for the US, I'm guessing it will be around $349.00 and will probably start shipping in November. I got the chance to play with the D3 a few weeks ago.  The keypad reminds me of the Nokia cell phones from a few years ago.

Distod3_montage_2 Measuring made easy – your versatile partner with a modern look!

  • Tilt measurement The instrument's inbuilt tilt sensor quickly and simply determines tilts up to ± 45°. The tilt sensor can also provide you with true horizontal distances. Reliable measurements are therefore guaranteed.
  • Multifunctional end piece Aim the instrument straight at the target point, whether measuring out of corners, slots or from edges: with this end piece you are prepared for all measuring situations. The instrument detects the end piece automatically, which helps you avoid expensive measuring errors.
  • Automatic keypad and display illumination A built-in sensor detects if the environment is dark and switches on the illumination of the keypad and display. You can also measure in the dark without any problem.
  • Multiple functions The Leica DISTO™ D3 can also calculate areas, volumes, room dimensions and various types of Pythagorean functions. A time delay release and enough memory for up to 20 measurements finish off the instruments wide range of functions – a concept designed to make
    your work easier.

Included items - practical and clever:

  • Holster: Stows everything away neatly
  • Target plate: Allows accurate measurement on a non-reflective surface.
  • Wrist strap: Secures the instrument at all heights

I've tried tape, roll, electronic and went back to tape... I love the idea of electronic, but the one I have throws inconsistant measurements (by up to 2 feet!) - It was a cheapy, and I'm sure this one is far better.

I'm with Mike...been using wheels since starting up and they haven't failed me yet.  I figure I have to walk the perimeter of the house anyway, so spending hundreds on something that can be accomplished for way less doesn't work for me.

Sara must have one of the sonic units with a laser pointer.   The DISTO measures with the actual laser and will not vary in the measurements.   The DISTO D3 is now down to 1mm accuracy.

John -- I think you are right about the device used by Sara. The sonic devices "bounce" off of everything.

I use a Disto Plus, predecessor to the A6. This laser is accurate to a 16th of an inch at 600 ft...not that I have been able to try the 600 ft since I can't see that tiny dot at that distance! This one has bluetooth and I use it with Apex's mobile sketch to draw the house as I walk around the house. I can actually clip my PDA to my belt and walk the perimeter drawing the house with just the laser. And, when you get to the last two walls, the computer sketch tells you the distances to close which you just verify with the laser. The laser is consistently less than a 10th of a foot off.

Now if they could only make this new laser with bluetooth!

I got one for Christmas!  OK... I love it, even if I am a technophobe -

Where have you been lately, Brian?  I miss your posts.

The distos have really come along way in terms of design in the past 5 or so years.  Nice to see they are working on making them less "brick" like.

A laser measuring tool like the Disto D3 is one of the best purchases an appraiser can make. I know I have my old tape in my car somewhere, but I haven't used it in more than a year. The day after I got my Disto I went to my morning appointment and started measuring at the garage (as I always do.) That thing was packed six feet high with junk from wall to wall; no problem at all with a Disto.

Sounds like a neat machine especially if you can download to a pda type device.

I agree with all of you.  I want a disto with bluetooth, and I have a tech addiction to the latest and greatest.  However, I roll twice and to a fault I am always acurate.  Sometimes, in LA the walls and the ground is not the same do to settlement issues and lack of quality in original building.  If you guys have a device that you would recomend with bluetooth of course I am all ears.  I still won't be giving up my tape!

I really like my Disto, I usually have to have a target attached to the end of the house to bounce the laser off of but every now and then I can bounce it off a fence. One day there was a lizard on the middle of the wall. I shot the laser on one side of him, walked to the other end of the wall and used the addition function and shot the laser on the other side of him and got the correct wall length. The lizard never knew what hit him!

These laser measurement tools are excellent for saving time. The only down side is it's not easy to see the "little red dot" when you are in a sunny location.

I love my Disto I have had one for 2 years now.  As for sunny days they sell glasses (red) that allows you to see the red on a sunny day.

I can't stand it when appraisers use wheels for residential houses. I love my Disto. It saves well over 1/2 the time of measuring, fits  in my pocket, entertains cats, and is extremely accurate. Bought mine from lasermeters.com too.

Hey Gang, Just bought a Disto and Love it.  The D3 is my tool of choice.  Purchased it at a company called www.distancemeterworld.com They gave me free laser glasses and when I called they also gave me a free angle finder.  Great bunch of guys!  When I had a questions they were more than capable to help me out.
