Olympia's annual Lakefair festival comes to town next week for its 2011 season of July 13-17. Here are some highlights of what you can expect:
Carnival rides, including that ferris wheel towering over Capitol Lake with awesome views of the Capitol Dome as you go up and up and up.
Food - lots and lots of food!! There will be community group booths doing fundraising by serving up the famed Demo burgers, corn on the cob, strawberry shortcake etc etc etc. And of course carnival food too - gotta have some cotton candy and elephant ears!
The annual surprise announcement of which of this year's Lakefair princesses will be queen - the method of making the announcement is always a deep, dark secret - and sure to be creative.
Lakefair parade - and Wow, is it a humdinger of a parade with bands, horses, floats from many of the other Washington towns and cities, clowns, antique cars, motorcycles, cheerleaders and drill teams, and more. It's an Olympia tradition that many will put their lawn chairs out along the parade route well in advance - and latecomers will still manage to squeeze in where they can relax and enjoy the parade.
Entertainment on stages in the park including music, dance performances - you can watch and listen while you munch that food you bought from the stands.
Sports too - the annual Lakefair race is fun whether you are a hard core competitive runner out to win a title or run a PR time - or would prefer to jog, walk, push the kids in the stroller and just enjoy being part of this community event.
And fireworks! Here you thought once 4th of July was over, that fireworks were gone til next year! But no - the grand finale of Lakefair is a big display of fireworks over Capitol Lake that will bring out the OOHS & AAHS even as you wish Lakefair could stick around longer...
