Anvil cloud structure: Mike in Tucson AZ mortgage lender

~ Anvil Cloud over Pima College ~

The foreground in a photo can add or detract from what otherwise might be an outstanding photo.  The subject here is clearly the anvil cloud structure in the background.

Pima College to the right in the midground of the photo seems out of place. It adds nothing to the photo; rather, it detracts from it.

I raced to a neighborhood a mile north of my location for the above photo in order to capture the very same cloud structure from a different perspective.  Look at the photo below.  The midground and foreground of the photo add dramatic effect by framing the very same anvil cloud structure. The framing gives perspective, and better yet, it allows you (the viewer) to imagine yourself standing in the path of a looming summer monsoon!

Try composing your real estate photos using the same technique, and you'll bring the potential buyer into the scene.  People buy on emotion, so it stands to reason that your photos ought to create some!

Hi, Mike -- to my eye, the top photo, with Pima College in the foreground, is also spectacular.  That cloud formation is a beauty -- good catch!

Mike, I'd love to see how you would've "cropped" that first photo - here's my take on it:

Hello Mike, great job on the photo details. If people would stop and think of what shot they are taking in the begining it would make a huge difference. I remember a reporter the other day was interviewing a Master Photographer and asked a question...at what point do you know wnen to push the button. As a past Pro I thought that comment was interesting as it's all in as you say the composition and timing. It's a creative thing, you just know.

Well, it's summer and I'll spend a lot of time cropping a lot of brown grass OUT.

Good photo techniques is something that many agents could surely use.  Agents who think that their camera bites are at a clear disadvantage.

Wait!!  My video camera bites.  Oh well.

HI Mike - incredible photographs, and thanks for the feedback. Buyers do buy on emotion, and in fact I have a showing tomorrow at a listing that the buyer wanted to view the property because of the photos!

Hi Mike - I love to see anvil clouds, but they do usually mean a big storm is coming.  They look really exciting though.  And I like your discussion of framing it - there is a difference.
