Lots of Tail Wagging, Tongue-Lolling Fun in Shelton CT

Has your pup got the blues? Is he or she just hanging around, sighing and reluctant to get up, even for walkies? Maybe what's called for is a bit of a romp with some friends. You say your dog hasn't got any? Well, get right on over to the new Shelton Dog Park and start making some!

Dog Bored

Set into motion by Mandy Oram, our local pet-loving dynamo and owner of Paws & Kisses Pet Sitting Service, along with several other active city dog park planning committee members, the Shelton Dog Park was opened less than a year ago at the corner of Nell's Rock Road and Route 108.

Shelton Dog Park

It has sturdy fencing to allow dogs to run in a leash-free environment, and is separated into 2 areas, so small dogs under 25 pounds can hang out and have fun without fear of larger dogs crashing their party.

Small Dog Park

The dogs' humans can watch the canine fun from the comfort of new benches scattered through the space, sharing their own social time with other dog lovers from the area.
A Friends of Shelton Dog Park group has been created and meets regularly to discuss the ongoing needs and hopes for enhancing the dog park area. This group is always looking for volunteers to join and help with fundraising and maintaining the park; for details, visit the Friends of Shelton Dog Park website.

To fund maintenance of the park, a Shelton Dog Park "Buy-a-Brick" campaign has been established. These bricks will be personalized with donor information, and a series of walkways created when enough bricks have been purchased.

To keep up with the latest news about the dog park and care for your pet, be sure to follow Mandy Oram's regular column in the Shelton Patch.

Good Morning, Barbara - I think Rocky is very lucky in his circle of friends - including all of us here at AR who enjoy the great photos of him. Wow! Happy Birthday, Rocky!

Hi Valerie - Whoa! I bet they do hate that! I guess it's hard to get those big dogs to understand just how rude they're being...  ;-)

Judy - people don't understand how important it is to take their dogs out for walks and dog parks, not just for the exercise, but the socialization and mental stimulation. Our Lucy loves to go to our local dog park - it's like taking her to Doggie Disneyland! Think of never leaving your property - life would get real boring real fast!

Hi Kristine - It's so true, isn't it? After all, dogs ARE pack animals, so need to see others of their kind to have a fun time together.

Hi Dorie - Yep, I think that dogs, like humans, can get kind of depressed when they don't have time for socializing with other dogs.

Hi BLiz - It seems to be pretty essential; otherwise the little ones can get pretty intimidated, which is not the point at all!

Hi Sharon - Thanks very much! I coudn't resist that bored/sad dog photo - perfect to illustrate the initial point here. I hope he/she gets to go to a doggie park really soon.
