Roberto Clemente had his last hit just before his death on a mission of mercy. Mr. Jeter told the story about how he took 300 swings a day in his garage as a kid.

Donna, I have been a Yankee Fan just about all my life, so I was glued to the TV set until he got that hit (home run).  He had an outstanding day going 5 for 5.  Only one thing would have made it a better day, and that is if one of those hits was a triple so that he would have gone for the cycle.  But the type of day that he had will still make a great movie.

Bruce - I remember vividly watching Roberto Clemente when he played for the Pittsburgh Pirates.  He was one of the all-time greats.

George - I was out almost all day yesterday and was so disappointed that I had to miss out on seeing Jeter get that 3,000th hit.  Looks like the time he had off from his injury paid off big time!

Donna, I was more amazed that he was the first Yankee to reach that milestone as they have had so many big hitters over the years. The way he did it was certainly memorable as well.

I have to admit, I was disappointed again by Jeetah.   When they closed the real Yankee Stadium (the House that Ruth Built) he gave a speak that was so weak, it's worse than his 2011 slugging percentage.  If you were asked to give that speach, were one of the most famous athletes in NY history, and appreciated the significance of the momen, what would you do?  I'd call Mayor Bloomberg and tell him I'm just a BB player, not a speach writer, but could I borrow his speach writer for help on what to say at the closing of the park?  He had a chance to be 'the luckiest man alive' or have come with a memorable quote that would have stayed in our minds about the park that's been torn down.

Now, he's got more hits as a Yankee than anyone who has ever worn the unifom.  He did it in incredible style with 5 hits in a day, and a home run for his 3,000 hit.  Then, he takes the ball and say 'thanks kid' from the fan who returned it to him.  He left it to the Yankees to give the guy tickets, Modells to give him some cash, etc.   He could have made a grand gesture there and give the guy $250,000 for the ball.  This is especially true afte he just held the Yankees hostage for $51 million and 3 years on a new contract that you knoe they'll be either releasing him, or paying someone to take off their hands by the 3rd year - at the latest.  Maybe next year he'll get Posadad and asked to bat 9th.

I don't dislike the guy.  I just find he's been there for every minute of glory since 1995 and never had an intelligible word to say about what's gone on.  To that end, I'd have to qualify him as one of the worst spoken players in the team's history.

Derek - call  me - I'll write your retirement speach.  Call me  this year while the fans still ove you - not in 2013 when they're ready to hang you for batting .215.

He's an amazing player and an amazing talent and an extremely hard worker who has kept his nose as clean as anyone in the sport.  I don't take one bit of that away from him.  But say something more that, "A O this was, like, real cool playin heah for so long.  Now, we gonna get a chans to do da same dink in the buildin across da street."  Ok, that last part was a stretch.  Sorry - you caught me - I'm a Mets fan!
