In light of the post about "cleaning your home" before someone shows it, I thought this post would be appropriate to re-blog.  Funny thing how foul odors turn people off.

Via Belinda Spillman Colorado Real Estate Professional (Cornerstone Homes/Metro Brokers Marina Square):

frigI wrote a blog yesterday about how some houses smell to high heavens when we are out on showings.

I received a comment about refrigerators and it reminded me of a situation I ran in to with Will a few months back.

We were frantically trying to find a home for a buyer because his home had gone under contract.  Not sure why he was surprised by this.  Afterall, isn't that why he hired us????

Anyway, we were in a bank owned property.  It was vacant (obviously) and pretty clean inside.  I think the water and power had been shut off, but no problem, it was the middle of the day so we did not need lights.

We were looking in every nook and cranny of the home.  I was in the kitchen and had my hand on the refrigerator door.  Just as I tugged to open it, Will said "Don't open that door".

Alas, the damage had been done. I looked inside and thought I was looking into the Black Lagoon and creatures would be oozing out at any moment.  It was covered with slimy black mold inside.

Then the smell just about knocked me off my feet.

The buyer and Will and I made a bee-line for the front door.  We never found fresh air so welcoming.

Once we were outside, Will asked why I would do such a stupid thing.  I punched him and we moved on to the next home.

Lesson learned: never open the refrigerator door in vacant homes.

Will I have not found anything like that in a house, but I have been in houses that I held my breath until I could get out of there.

Good Morning Will, a great post with a good point to remember.  An excellent choice to put up again.

Will, it is my unfortunate chore to deal with those Black Lagoons.  And, I know plenty of realtors who also learned the hard way (like Belinda).
