Good news for Onslow and six surrounding counties came on Friday, October 12 from Lt. Governor Beverly Perdue. At a briefing with the commanding general of the Marine Corps Installations East, Lt. Governor Perdue announced that thousands of troops and their families would be moving into the area during the next five years.
Lt. Governor Perdue reminded all that the military has an $18 billion impact on North Carolina. A Military Growth Task Force has been implemented to help the area make needed preparation for the influx of approximately 25,000 active duty Marines, civilian staff and families.
Over the next five years, an additional 61,000 people (13.7 percent growth) are expected to move to Onslow, Carteret, Craven, Pamlico, Jones, Duplin and Pender counties. The president and CEO of North Carolina's Eastern region stated "this is the biggest announcement of economic development in North Carolina".
