Facebook Event SPAM - can we do better?

Most of the time I just let things like this pass.  Every now and again… Not so much.

My email notification says I was just invited to an Open House!

Facebook Event Spam

I really have to wonder why?  After all, I’m not in the market, I don’t sell real estate, and the distance to this event is only 3,000 miles away!

Facebook Event Spam 2Yeah, I know this happens all the time.  What caught my eye was the person who invited me.  It wasn’t a person at all but a profile operating as a business.  That’s a big no no!  Then I noticed they didn’t just invite me, they invited over 3,700 people from all across the country.  So much for my feeling special.

So I have a few choices to make.

  • I can ignore the event all together and just pile it on every other event that’s meaningless to me.
  • I can go see who it was that added me to this event (http://www.facebook.com/fasttrackproperties) and block them and / or report them.
  • I can remove the event and even report it as spam.

I chose to leave a very deliberate comment on the event’s wall. (http://www.facebook.com/event.php?eid=179980565399374)

spam message

Yeah I know, maybe a little snarky, but this was all before my 2nd cup of coffee.  What was even better was one of the organizers responses…

Snarky Response

Nicole, I love the fire (really) and your effort to sell the place is admirable (really) but I beg to differ with you.  I believe you might (need a new business development consultant) (REALLY!)

Let’s all start doing this social media stuff better – ok?

got invited to I hate Steven Singer's worlds largest bubble bath event.  Pretty sure Philly is over 1,000 miles away.  Booooo.  And it is getting harder and harder to excuse stuff with the 'probably a noob' excuse this far in.

I also thought your event response was rather restrained

Yup.  I get a ton of that junk too.  It is very irritating.

This is annoying and obviously a poor use of the software. People who use it for business should take the time to learn how to use it properly.  On the other hand, it's difficult to figure out how some of the FB features work, especially since they keep changing the interface - I'm not defending this action, but possibly explaining it.

INCREDIBLY  - that was yesterday.  Just now, they did it again.  Different property, same people, still 3,000 miles away.  Wowzers!

Dang Mike. I didn't get invited to either one. How can I get unwanted spam like you? Just kidding, I get enough junk. But armed with Mike ideas, I can now have some fun.

Mike so does that mean you do not want me to invite you to my open house?:))) Just kidding, on a different matter do you think Google+ will give FB a run for it?
