Old trees ripped from the ground in Illinois and young pines bent over in Virginia.  I micro-burst?  A wind shear?

Who knows??

Alan reminded me that I got a photo of a clearly wind damaged area in Prince William County last week.

Some of you may know that we had a heck of a storm pass through the Evanston area yesterday morning.

It roared through here around 8:00 in the morning, and a mere fifteen-twenty minutes later was simply a memory.  But it left over 170 trees, or large branches down in Evanston, and hundreds of thousands of Chicago-area residents without power, and/or cable.  In my case, it left me without Comcast which handles my Cable television, broadband and telephone.

But I'm more fortunate than others, as we had no loss of trees, no damage to the house, no water in the basement, and we still have electricity.  As I write this there are still close to 100,000 Commonwealth Edison customers still without power, in hot and steamy condition.

Just to give you an idea of the power of this short-lived storm, here are a few photos of downed-trees in our area.

It must have been a bit of a micro-burst, as there was no report of a tornado or funnel cloud in the area... just localized strong-winds, and a lot of rain.

Hopefully, all will be improved, repaired and restored soon.

Lenn it is amazing how powerful mother nature can be.  I can't even imagine the wind force that caused that kind of damage.

George.  I can't either.  I remember that storm.  It lasted only about 30 minutes but left a lot of damage.

Some times storms are useful.

Last Friday, that big storm hit Potomac and brought down one of the large Flowering Pears in front of my Potomac property blocking the front door of the house!

I have been waiting for this to happen, since this is the only way one gets Montgomery County to cut down their trees on the county right of way.

I am now waiting for another storm to knock down the second tree the county has marked 14 months ago!

Winds don't have to be hurricane force or a tornado to do damage.

Some of the storms are fierce!  I lost two trees in my front yard this year.  Time to replant this fall.

Lenn,

What an incredible destructive power of nature. Just twenty minutes and quite some damage.

WOW !!!  We had one lik that last year.  I heard it was coming and had three trees taken down the day before.  The one tree we left  was like the one in the photo - the tree surgeon felt it was "safe."  He was wrong.  It uprooted during the storm just like the photos and missed my roof and the neighbor's car by inches.  The number of trees ripped up was unbelievable and parts of White Plains were without power for 5 days.  Emergency repair people came from all over the country.  It was March and very cold.Below freezing.  I had no heat for 3 days (I was lucky) and areas of Scarsdale,Larchmont, were without power for several days as well.  THe heat can be more dangerous for the elderly than the cold though.  So people need to take good care.  If they are older they should seek shelter if they have no power.  Its very, very hot here- but the midwest is having a harder time than we are.

Eric. Indeed.  The power is awesome.

Belinda.  All things considered, we've been fortunate this year.

Simone.  In some older areas of Potomac, as Bethesda, those old trees with the shallow roots cannot take a strong wind.

Evely.  That's just the thing.  Those trees do NOT have deep roots.  If they did, the tree could take the wind.  Winds topple trees in urban ares with shallow root systems.

Anne.  True.  Sometimes, even in a moderate strom, wind gusts or wind shears will topple a tree.

Kay.  I lost one two years ago.  Not a big loss.

Jon.  Indeed.  It's some of those quick storms that have severe high winds.

Ruthmarie.  Hurricane Isabel left me without electricity for 5 days.  Since moving to Virginia, I've had outages of up to 48 hours, but I can manage that.

Lou.  Yep.  The little ones just blow away.

Lenn - look at how the grass is blown in one direction and the trees in another.  This was no wind sheer.  Obviously an alien space craft stopped by.  Bummer you missed it.
