3 Cheap and Easy Ways to Make Your Home A Little Greener

Having an energy-efficient, eco-friendly home is a great idea for many reasons. However, some people see big price tags when they think of trying to convert to a green lifestyle. Installing solar panels or all-new, energy-efficient appliances can certainly make going green seem like spending big bucks, but there are some simple (and cheap!) lifestyle changes that anyone can implement to help conserve energy, lighten your footprint, and even save you a little money!

Take Your Temperature

Nearly half of a home's energy consumption comes from heating and cooling. We've grown so reliant on heat and air-conditioning that we tend to overuse it without even realizing it. It is very easy to cut back on this consumption and make a noticeable difference in your utility bills. As a general house rule, when it's cold, try not to go above 68F. Also keep in mind that for every degree you can tolerate below 68F, you will save 3-5% in heating energy. Moral of the story: bundle up! During the summer try and keep your house cooled at around 78F. While that may not sound like a comfortable temperature for the summertime, give it a try and you'll be surprised at how quickly your body will adjust its inner thermometer. Remember that sunlight will generate heat, so be conscious of when/where the sun shines in your home. Consider if you want to exploit the sun's warmth by keeping windows extra clean and unobstructed, or block it with a nice cool shade, a light curtain, or some plants.

New Light Bulbs = BIG Difference

The time for change has come. Changing a light bulb that is. The new Compact Fluorescent light bulbs (CFL's) use up to 66% less energy than a standard incandescent bulb and last up to ten times longer! Replacing a 100-watt incandescent bulb with a 32-watt CFL can save $30 in energy costs over the life of the bulb. That is reason enough for every household to make the switch CFL's.

Mind Your Materials

We could write a whole new blog (and we probably will!) listing the many household products and materials that have a more eco-friendly alternative. We encourage you to keep in mind that everything from cleaning products to interior paints have eco-friendly options. Building new construction or renovating? Try and use some of the newer, more eco-friendly building materials, such as bamboo for flooring in replace of hardwood floors. As consumers, our spending power influences the markets, so buying Green only helps the cause.
