Have you heard of 'ST&D?' And no, it is not some sort of unmentionable condtion...
I read today that New York has passed a new anti-texting law called 'ST&D' (Stop Texting and Drive). It is now considered a primary offense to be texting and driving, and if an officer suspects you doing it, you will be stopped and ticketed. No other violation has to occur; suspicion of texting and driving can get you pulled over and ticketed. You can find a brief overview of the new legislation in, New York ban on texting and driving gets tougher with new law.
Texting while driving is becoming an increasingly challenging traffic issue. We have all been behind someone who is mildly swerving only to see the glint of their phone as they press 'send.' We may even have tried to squeeze out a text or two ourselves while behind the wheel.
I am glad to see states, such as New York, get tough on texting (here in Virginia, we can't even get tough on behind-the-wheel cell phone use).
I know this is an issue near and dear to all of us who spend our lives driving around. We are on the road a lot yet we still must be in communications with clients and the office. It can be hard sometimes to resist the urge to send a quick text.
I wrote a blog post about a year ago, A very sad last tweet . It was the most read post I have ever written. I guess that tells you something about the seriousness of the issue. While Tweeting and Texting are different ways of communicating, it is the recipient that makes them different, not the process.
I would love to see car stickers, like those we see for vacation properties, that display the ST&D logo:
Please get the word out about what a serious problem this is becoming. If someone was driving around with a PC on their lap, there would be outrage. We need to teach our children, our friends and our families how one second of glancing down to find the right key can change lives forever (sorry to sound so melodramatic, but it is the TRUTH). We have started using a 'designated texter' in our family if the driver's phone signals the arrival of a text message.
Have a safe summer and remember, 'ST&D!'
