A Fascinating Place to Soak Your Bones

Grover Hot Springs

Grover Hot Springs Side Bar   There is a place within a 120 miles of Sacramento, which had escaped my visit before.  I had heard whispers of it, but had missed out on realities this treasure held secreted away.  Yesterday, I was allowed discovery.

Grover Hot Springs is peacefully cradled on the east side of the Sierras at 6,000 feet above sea level.  It is a pleasant 4 miles west of Markleeville, at the very end of Hot Springs Road.

There are telltale signs on nature's canvas, along the drive out of Markleeville to the Hot Springs.  Hot Spring Creek meanders peacefully across verdant meadows in copious shades of green!  From the ground, water springs forth at a hot 148 degrees.  It contains a variety of dissolved minerals, often found in thermal springs, which create interesting features as waters emerge.

Because this prolonged winter season dumped double the average snowfall and rain on the Sierras, bountiful evidence is provided everywhere in the surrounding landscape.  The native grasses, trees, wildflowers, seem to be outdoing themselves in a way I have never seen.

There is still a good amount of snow in the mountains.  We experienced an unexpected adventure with it, which I will blog about in a day or two.

At Grover Hot Springs, there are two pools.  The green color of the older pool is attributed to the mineral content from the springs.  This pool is kept at approximately 102 degrees to please visitors.  There is also a newer cool water pool on-site.

Once privately owned, the facility is now part of the California State Park System.  There is nearby camping, and day use facilities as well.

I also highly suggest visitors to the area, check out the delightful town of Markleeville.  There are quaint shops, cafes and restaurants.  From Sacramento - A perfect day-trip or one tank of gas getaway!

For more information, you can visit the
Grover Hot Springs website.

The website provides great information about the reasonable fees associated with the Grover Hot Springs and Campground.  There is also a resource for maps, directions, and amenties available in the park, and surrounding area.

Think: Fishing - Camping - Hiking - Swimming - Biking - Relaxing!

Diane - I use Paint Shop Pro's Animation Shop to create the slide show.  I created a tutorial about it which can be accessed via: http://activerain.com/blogsview/1317373/activerain-photo-blogger-animated-blogging-tutorial-using-paintshop-pro

Richard - It is pretty amazing to think that you could get that kind of power at 6000 feet isn't it.  I suspect it's all about pressure!  Some things just work best under pressure:-)

Janice - It really is a neat place to soak.  The weather up at the Springs was not too hot, and there were breezes.  It all made for a really pleasant experience!

Alexandra - There is also David Walley's Hot Springs not far from these.  I think most folks should search out the special spots near where they are located, so they can go visit once in awhile!

Kathy - Yesterday, it was about treating 3 granddaughters to a special day!  (1) A little soak in the hotsprings. (2) A little fishing in a special secret lake that someone knew about.  But didn't happen because it was snowed in.  (3) A little bit of target practice with BB guns:-)

Gary - I'm glad you enjoyed the slide show.  In all my years of shuffling around this planet, I have never seen this part of the Sierras looking this verdant and green in mid July.  When we eventually got stuck in snow and had to rely on about a dozen strong guys to help work us out of it, I kept thinking, "This is mid-July folks!"

Judi - It was really a unique experience because of its special location and views!

Hi Myrl, A great photo story. Naturally I was wondering about the odd color but you explained that very well. So did you spend the day soaking your bones? Were you traveling about or did you go for the day. I find it fascinating that with so many photos available the official site does have any. You might consider offering your signed editions.

Kwee - Grover Hot Springs is an out-of-town destination.  There's no doubt about that!

William - This was a daytrip.  We were focused on 3 activities, which was a pretty agressive agenda for a single day.  And we came upon all sorts of road blocks along the way.  There was highway 50 road construction, and damage to highway 88.  We also got stuck in snow, and that took us awhile to get free of.  However, we did manage to be at the hotsprings for a couple of hours, have a great dinner at the Kirwood Inn, and then do a little BB gun shooting:-)  I still can't believe we were that stuck in snow in the middle of July!

Chris - I'm glad you like the stuff I post:-)  I hope you are having a GREAT week!

That sure looks inviting, Myrl. My back could use that right now. The meadow pictures are lovely-lots of pretty wildflowers after all that snow and rain. Cute bird too.

Hi Myrl,

That looks like a very cool "hot" spot.  Does the water stain bathing suits?

Myrl, Could this be the 8th Wonder of the World? What if this was the fountain of youth? Whatever it is, this place is phenomenal! Thanks for sharing the information. It's very intriguing and to think, it was practically in your own backyard. Thanks for sharing the information about how to do the slide show. I'm going to give it try. You are so creative and generous when it comes to sharing knowledge and I truly appreciate that very much, and especially getting to know you in the RAIN. NAR should be proud of how connected we are as a result of ActiveRain.

Toni - The bird is a Stellar Jay.  We have Blue Jays here in Sacramento, but up in the area of the Hot Springs they have the Stellar Jays.  The difference is a little top knot on their head.

Rebecca - I couldn't help but think what it would be like to visit in October when the leaves had turn golden, or in February when snow was on the ground.  However, the springs aren't always open in winter months, because of accessibility.

Lisa - I had a newer suit that I was wearing, and I had a little concern about that, but it didn't stain.  A lot of what you are seeing in color, is longterm embedding of minerals in the plaster of the pool.  The light makes it appear that it is the color of the water since the plaster is no longer white.

Patricia - Well, I don't think it is the fountain of youth, but I was certainly hoping it might be.  Still, the de-stressing when you step into that pool is nearly instantaneous.

Linda - Also, not far from these Hot Springs are David Walley's Hot Springs over in nearby Genoa Nevada.  There are more pools there.  And outstanding facilities.

Rosemary - It was only a daytrip for us, but because we packed in so much activity with other things, it seemed we were gone for a few days.

Roy - It didn't appear to stain our suits.  The color you are seeing in the pool, is mainly from the discolored plaster that happened over time from continued exposure to the minerals.

Myrl - it's amazing that such a beautiful and grand place has been kept a secret, but that's part of it's charm and beauty. You did an amazing job of capturing it's beauty and it must have been a wonderful outing with the family! Love the bird photo - really cool looking!
