Yankee Ultralight Flyers...Sanderson's Field Fly-In, Greenland NH July 8-16, 2011
For 20 years, ultralight and general aviation enthusiasts have been coming to Ted Sanderson's private 2,500' grass runway on Post Road in Greenland, NH in July for a week long fly-in, something resembling a cross between a rock music festival, camping expedition and sport flying adventure. With each passing year, attendance at this annual event continues to "soar" (do I hear 210,000 groans? Sorry, I couldn't stop myself), with all aircraft and the public welcome.
Yankee Ultralight Flyers "Club" was founded in late 1990, originally meeting in Berwick, ME at Bob Ring's field and was chartered by the United States Ultralight Association as club number 202. Back in those days, ultralight aircraft consisted mainly of home-built small engine ultralights, but today their membership comprises the East Coast from Florida to Canada and includes not only enthusiasts of fixed wing ultralights, but powered parachutes, rotorcraft, and all manner of aviation aircraft. I'm told a recent fly-in included an owner of a DC3!
Yankee Ultralight Flyers Fly-In * Camp-In is as colorful as any Albuquerque, NM International Balloon Festival. Overnight and weeklong stays at Sanderson's Field in Greenland, NH are encouraged by the club, providing campsites, food catered by Angelino's Sausage House of Hillsboro, NH on July 8-10, live music including local bands like Lobster Creek and a large covered pavilion for central activities.
Yankee Ultralight Flyers is especially proud of their "Young Eagles" program, where youths between the ages of 8 and 17 can fly with any member of the club, receive a certificate of their experience and have their hours logged in the "World Largest Logbook." "Young Eagle" members number over 1 million!
The public is welcome. Please stop by if you have the chance. You will find the staff (in the yellow tee-shirts) and members friendly and welcoming. Be sure to tell them, "Some guy on the internet told me to stop by."
As you will see in the brief video below, aircraft are taking off and landing all the time, so be sure to have your camera handy for these exciting moments.
