What’s the Point with points?

New to AR, Could someone please point out - what’s the point with points? Or is the accumulation of points simply pointless. I’m sure others have the same question – but you get my point. On another note let me point you to the new group a new group as an open forum to discuss new technology, marketing tips, tricks and issues, etc - be among the first to post your topic, to share ideas, strategies, suggestions, resources, etc - to be the most read post. I opened the group with the topic of new video technology used for video email, broadcasting, and video home tours, and look forward to your comments – and to respond to your post. See you there - take care – TJ http://activerain.com/groups/techtalk

This what I know,

Comments on other peoples blogs gets you 25 points.

Blog entries with 50 words or more are worth 200.

You get points for your profile and other things like that.

Also you get points for linking to AR and invititng people to join AR.

I hope that helps.

The only "point" I see to points is moving up the chain of realtors when you search for one in a specific state... is that right?

I like blogging and commenting to share info, ideas and opinions though...

Sometimes I wonder how folks spend their days when they have REALLY high points...

Point well taken. Amassing points can have a point, depending on which direction you wish to point. Points in and of themselves are pointless. You can't redeem points for gifts or prizes. So what's the point, you ask? Well, the more points you earn, the higher your ranking within your respective market area. This becomes more and more crucial on the sister platform, Localism.com, where potential clients will find you, especially if you're the featured agent in your area. The bottom line is - the more you are involved and contribute here, the greater your chances of being ranked well by the Google search ranking.

TJ,

Welcome to AR.

I was about to write about discount and origination points, then I opened your blog. My disappointment was gone when I saw you were from God's country! I left Mt Pleasant to return to Las Vegas lastThursday. I explained my trip in today's posting: You Too Should Remember Jack And updated informationa about my prants home at Stevson Lake at: http://activerain.com/blogsview/159821/Leave-it-to-MotherI went to grade school in Rosebush. (7 miles North.)

Regarding your question, AR's points promoted participation. Many people worry about points but most of us don't care. You can't care because points are points, you get the same points for a feel good fulff article of 50 words as a long serious dissertation.

Many believe the point system explains the explosive success of Active Rain, what ever we all benafit.

Your home page is a little sparse, I for one would like to know more about what you do. If only because I read and speak Midwestern.Bill

TJ,

when A?R started points were given out as a reward system. They encouraged you to post as many times as you wanted, unlimited.

As A/R grew the pt system has a different meaning.

Thanks for the clarification, and for responding. Although accumulating points, for me would be near pointless, as the project I'm working on is not limited to developing a local network as it benefits realtors, lenders etc - on a national basis. I read a blog that was posted a while ago about the topic that, in it a guy shows how to manipulate the point system to his advantage, by adding many local links and expanding his area adding much more than would normally be accumulated with regular use - but I guess they no longer offer points for those type of links now.  It makes me wonder if people put too much importance on the point system with the expectation that their blogs will be found in Google searches, or just to have more than the next guy. Guess we like to compete in all things - even those that are for intensive purposes pointless. That being said - I'd like to trade my points to someone for an old button, a piece of lint, and two " 'at-a-boys" .
