Who Cares About Market Updates? Customer's Don't

Real estate agents are trained to tell everyone how the market is doing.  Some people send out newsletters.  Some people send out postcards.  Some people use social media to get the word out on their market.

The problem is no one really cares about them.  They used to care.  Why?

Because it was good news.  You saw solds and you were like wow I made $30,000 this month.  My house is skyrocketing.  This was the best purchase ever.

Now.  Well not so much.

People do not like bad news and in most cases people do not trust the market updates anymore.  How many buyers have you taken out recently that say well yes the market update shows I should pay $300,000 for this property, but I want to pay $250,000.  Why because they do not care what the market update says.

Like the old adage "your house is only worth what a particular buyer is willing to pay for it"

I know that realtors will continue to post market updates and send out newsletters, but I believe there are better ways and you need to be more creative to attract more customers.  Do not do what everyone is doing.

Dare to be different!

Be Creative, Specific and Consistent in your marketing and you will maximize your efforts.  Good luck to everyone.

David you make good points here.  Buyers just want to find a great deal and sellers only care what their own house is worth.

Christi, thank you for comment.  You are exactly right and very simply put.  Thanks again.

I see what you're saying but don't completely agree. If I'm an active buyer or seller, of which I have been in recent years, I like to have some clue of what the marketing is doing. Without this information, how can I make an informed decision? I do agree we all tire of the bad news AND that you need to do something different. I think market reports are often the easiest thing to produce and publish (yes, I do them and am guilty).

Here's to creative thinking!

Dean & Paula, thank you for your comment.  I do agree you have to be informed, but you can pull some recent comparables when a buyer is making the decision, but marketing and posting market updates i believe people do not really care about them

it would be interesting to have a national survey about this issue and find out if concern varies by region or metro.
