The Guidelines to a Successful Life Can be Taught at An Early Age - - - Pay it Forward

Most golfers understand and appreciate the value and importance of teaching youngsters the proper way to play the game and also the proper comportment that must be maintained on the golf course.

This is taught by the head professional, Ken Gemmell, at Crestbrook Park Golf Coursein Watertown CT.

The game may not require the great degree of athleticism as other sports, but it does require some degree of coordination and agility.

More importantly, the game, if played properly, requires focus and concentration, which is essential throughout our life if we are to be successful.

It also teaches integrity and a sense of ethical comportment, as a golfer is primarily responsible for following the rules of the game, and reporting a penalty to themselves if they violate the rules.

How often in our careers are we faced with decisions to make that require integrity and ethical behavior?

The computer monitor at the golf course was on it's last legs. All scores are posted to maintain a handicap, and it was difficult to see the screen.

Having recently shut down our office, I had several flat screen monitors still around, and I donated one to the Junior Golfers and the other leagues that use the computer.

It was a small gesture, for sure, but hopefully it will keep the enthusiasm of some of the younger golfers going. The Junior program at the course has been successful over the years. Many a youngster has learned the game and practiced it to use it to their advantage. Scholarships have been earned for college; playing scholarships have also been earned by some of the junior golfers that started their games here; and we've even had juniors that started the game and went on to be head professionals at other golf courses in the area.

Golf is just a game, but when played properly life lessons can be learned and that is the best reward any one of us that supports the game can hope for.

Good morning, Ed. How nice. It is better to recycle unused equipment like that instead of just tossing or letting it gather dust. Things like this typically pay off in the long run...

Excellent use of old monitors Ed! And don't forget that you also paid it forward to the environment as well by using those monitors instead of 'chucking' them!!

Barbara, I've seen it with some of the current younger members remembering how they started

Gita, thank you, and thanks for stopping

Barbara, I just got our 2 year old, Raphael his first putter. When he comes into the house he asks to go downstairs to play golf

Michael, it was not just gathering dust, it was in the way

Cindy, thanks. I've learned a lot about life because of trying to play the game properly

Don, they start up there at around 6 and they are fun to watch as well.

Hey A & P, I still have some old electronics that need to be tossed, but there is a hold on collecting them in our area, as they don't know what to do with all of it.

Juli, it was like all of a sudden there was color, and no squinting to see the screen.

Thank you Maria, and thanks for stopping

Ed, Great way to Pay it Forward! An avid golfer friend told me that people play golf the same way they live their lives. I'd say he is correct.

Ed, that might have been a small jester for you, but I am sure that it was not seen as a small jester by those that received the computer monitors.

How old was Tiger Woods when he started learning to golf? You'll never know what affect you might have had on some young boy or girl by paying it forward with some flat-screen monitors ;)

Your story reminds me of one of my all time favorite books All I Really Need to Know I learned in Kindergarten by Robert Fulghum where he shares "wisdom was not at the top of the graduate school mountain, but there in the sandpile at Sunday school."  Other pearls of wisdom include:   Share everything.  Play fair.  Don't hit people.  Put things back where you found them.  Clean up your own mess.  Don't take things that aren't yours.  Say you're sorry when you hurt somebody.  Wash your hands before you eat.   Flush.... you get the idea.

You always seem to be looking for ways to give back - very inspiring.
