A Different Post for Today...a Tribute to Severn School Alum Harold Norton

I was going to write my normal Realtor post of what I learned today. It was going to be about Google+. But that can wait until tomorrow.

I saw a Facebook message come in via Email yesterday. It was from the Alumni Director, Denise Tray Rosson, at Severn School. I had just run in to her recently at the Annapolis Apple Store and before that the Harvest Bread Store. She wanted to post something on the Private "Severn Class of 1974 & Other Admirals" Group I started. I knew when I saw the message something was wrong. Anyway, Facebook archived the Group. Maybe it IS time to move to Google+.  Reunions EMails, then Reunion Facebook, now Reunion Google+?

She needed to post this message.

We have lost a Severn Classmate, Class of 1974, Harold Norton, a Lawyer, Family Man, Classmate and Friend.

I cannot stop thinking about it.

I have a recurring image frozen in my mind of him with a great big smile.

Not sadness, a GREAT big HUGE smile.

A smile that bordered on him laughing. A smile that stretched for miles.

And that is how I think of him and that is how I remember him and despite the fact that it defies gravity, that is the picture that will stay in my mind because quite frankly, it cannot be erased.

The Norton Family has gone to my small High School to coordinate a Memorial. What a great idea.

Several of my classmates had emails flying back and forth to me all yesterday.

We had to scramble to get the correct updated emails for each other but after being classmates together for six years there is no real catch up time. We simply know and understand each other. Which also means we can bust each other out or shed a tear or two or get raw together really fast.

One of my pals said she was thinking very hard about Harold when the meaningful James Taylor song "Fire and Rain" came on.

Oddly, when I lost my Golden a few years back I had played a lot of JT the preceding week. About an hour after I lost my Golden, I walked in to Starbucks and as I walked in the door "Fire and Rain" was playing.

I felt like it was his way of telling me that he was okay. And that I would be, too.

My heartfelt condolences to Harold Norton's family and friends and Severn Alums.

He's got a big smile that stretches for miles and always will.

Cheryl, I love your branding with the Goldens....we have a Golden and I don't think I could handle more than one. She is a joy to us truly. I love the collage.

What a heartfelt post and so inspiring. Thanks for sharing what is difficult for us all. Your expression and philosophy are beautiful.

Cheryl - sorry for your loss - your friend and your dog several years ago - trust me, I've been there and it is one of the saddest things you go through - I still miss my Jessie who passed 4 years ago, but I love my Lucy and she is 4, so I'll have her for a long, long time to come.

Thank you Cheryl. I too will remember my brother for his smile along with his sense of humor and love of music. He drove me to my first concert and I listened to many a JT, Beatles, Neville Brothers, Poco and Eagles song with him, from 8track to cassette to CD. He even got me into Hammerjacks to see Billy Payne play piano. He loved and gave so much. I share your experience On losining a Golden as well as the unique and priceless ability to pick right back up with Severn buds. The Severn bonds run deep especially between friends but even between those we haven't met for the mere fact we share the Severn experience. Hugs!
