Does the grand opening of a Target and Home Depot a big deal in your city? It is here in Charlotte because not only will this provide much needed retail establishments to the Uptown, Midtown, and South End, but it's just the beginning of a rebirth of Charlotte's center city. You wouldn't know to it driving around but there is an entire mall uptown that once featured a Belk. Overstreet Mall is an entire mixed-used retail and restaurant space that is all on the second floor of several uptown office building, connected by sky bridges. Today, Overstreet is largely served by those working uptown for lunch or that need a quick change of clothes.

Target, Home Depot, and Trader Joe's are joining Harris Teeter and Dean & Deluca as providing Charlotteans a reason go to uptown besides work. Over the next 5 years, Charlotte will continue to grow with the addition of over 1.1 million square feet of retail, entertainment, and restaurant.

EpiCenter is among one of the most exciting projects in Uptown. The project will feature 250,000 sq. ft., containing a 16 screen theatre, retail, McFadden's Steak House, a dueling piano bar called Howl at the Moon, and a live music restaurant that will be owned and operated by NASCAR's most popular driver, Dale Earnhardt Jr. What's even more is that this project will be connected to the Overstreet Mall and to the 44 story residential tower called 210 Trade.

So to handle parking in the expected high-traffic areas, city officials are looking to using car elevators. If you've been overseas, car elevators are widely used in cities like Toyko where every square foot counts. Instead of having large, sweeping parking decks and ramps, a simple elevator will take your car to the appropriate level to park. The lifts will be able to be handle everything from a Hummer to a Smart car.

Look out Los Angeles, Dallas, Chicago, D.C., and New York City. Charlotte's moving up!
