De-Cluttering: Craig's List is KING!

By
Industry Observer

Got junk?

(Don't we all?)

Craig's list is a great way to pass on your lovely stuff to someone else.

For the last few weeks, I've been following this pattern:

  1. Gather up a pile of up to a half-dozen things that need a new home.
  2. Lay the out on a table, the floor, or in the driveway, grouped by planned listing (i.e. "pottery", "bike", "lamps")
  3. Take photos, upload into the computer.
  4. Post on Craig's List for a very attractive price.
  5. If they don't sell in a day or so, I lower the price and re-post.
  6. If they still don't sell, they go to Goodwill, and I get a receipt for a tax deduction!

One thing that is also working - when someone comes to get one item, offer them other items for super-cheap.

I have a whole table of nice pottery and plates, serveware, baking dishes, etc., that just don't reel in the buyers as Craig's List postings, but I've been able to sell for a few dollars here and there.

By breaking this HUGE task (a big house, getting ready to sell) into small chunks, it is manageable and not overwhelming.

Remember - it's not really about the $$$ because this is your OLD stuff, not new, fresh current stuff. It's about passing it on to someone else, reducing the stuff that goes in the landfill, and having it hauled away for you so you don't have to.

Even my old-school, depression-era Mom who is helping with this task re-assured me that it was OK not to feel guilty about having so much stuff to pass on - it all served it's purpose in my home for many long years!

I've collected about $400 and counting - enough to off-set a lot of the cost of paint and painting supplies for the next phase of freshening up my home to sell!

Craigslist is a great way to get rid of things in your local area. When flipping I take things to the curb, take a pic, and post FREE take all. Gone in two days

Yep! And what is truly great about it is that local folks who want your item(s) can come and pick it up from the front porch and there is no need to deal with US snail mail.

Harry - that is a great idea - will do that with all the left-over big items.

Ellie - that is so true. I never get around to mailing ANYTHING which is why I'm not willing to eBay anything! I want someone else to come and get it!!

Paul - a piano! And a sailboat! Awesome!!!

Bonnie - hope you and your clients find some value!

James - what a smart idea!  Are you getting some traffic?

Good girl!  So many people don't understand the value of this great resource.  So much easier than a garage sale!

Thanks Mimi - I had heard of a family up in Cedar Park that was struggling, so a bunch of stuff just got picked up and taken to them!  This is turning into a GREAT day. Stuff lined up in front of the house, people pulling up, chatting, then taking their new-found treasures.

And I have Orlando and my 9 year old taking loads to Goodwill.

Another option - I have a friend who camps a LOT, and sometimes takes my kids. She has agreed to "borrow" my camping gear for the long haul. She gets to use it, and we get to borrow it back if we go camping. We both win - she gets stuff she needs and uses frequently and we retain access to stuff we use only ocassionally. And I'm of the type that doesn't get bent out of shape when stuff gets accidentally damaged during use, so we're not worried about what happens to the gear. WIN WIN!!!!

Thanks Steve - it's been one heck of a day, but some people came back for a second round and have commented on how much STUFF is gone from the garage.

The only thing I've ever posted on Craigslist are listings......I really should give this a try and do some decluttering of my own.
