My phone rings and I see an unknown out of state number. I answer in anticipation of a potential new client moving to the area who has read my blog or found me online and wants to chat. I answer cheerily, Good morning, this is Sherri! The next thing I hear is...
Hi Sherri, this is XYZ with XYZ and we can help your website rank higher on google....yadayadayada.
Excuse me? I'm already on page one of Google for almost every keyword search I can think of. I know I'm not perfect and there is so much more I can do to improve my website. But, help me improve my ranking? I rank higher than zillow, homefinder, and realtor for most of my targeted keywords. Why would I pay you to "help" me rank higher!? I am already on Page one organically because of good old fashioned work, writing, linking, and blogging! What again is it that you have to offer me? I just searched and Google had my website as number two on page one so that is a pretty impressive claim that you can help me rank even higher!
I used to be patient and listen for a few minutes. But the calls came more frequently and I soon realized I was just wasting my time. These sales people obviously had NO clue that I was already ON page one or that I probably knew more about keywords and SEO than they did!
The higher I get my website in the rankings the more of these calls I get. I receive several every single week. It makes no sense to me that someone selling SEO to improve a website would call a Realtor who is already at the top of the dog pile! I've decided that as long as I get these annoying calls regularly then my website must be doing great with the search engines! I will only be concerned when people promising to HELP improve my rankings stop calling.
Maybe I need to contact Lady Gaga and stress that since I am a mother to teen girls, I have valuable knowledge to help her become more popular with main stream pop music. I'm sure that is worth a monthly fee to her!
