It was 1966, the center of the universe in the United States was San Francisco. Many new music groups were forming in the bay area.
But, despite the excitement in the USA, and the words "hippie" and "flower power" the bands from the U.K. were ruling the record charts in the United States.
The music critics rate the rock music of the mid-60's as the best of the best. Creativity was at an all time high. Rock music was getting sophisticated and many tricks were being used in the recording studio to create sounds that were hard for bands to duplicate in their live performances.
That, however, was NOT the case with the song that went to #1 on the Billboard singles chart on July 30, 1966. To this day, some critics refer to the wild song, and other releases by this group, as "caveman" music. The sound was raw and the lyrics were suggestive. With those attributes going for the tune, no wonder it has been covered several times since and has found it's way into many a movie soundtrack.
The song went to #2 in the band's homeland, England. It went to #1 for two weeks here in the USA. If you were around back then, you will remember this song. It is a classic.
To see the original artists perform the very song that took them to the top of the charts 45 years ago, simply click on Ed Sullivan. Ed, being the host that he is, will introduce you to the band.
