Marathon Deli located at 250 West Street (Rte 135), Ashland Massachusetts is a terrific local sandwich shop on the Hopkinton/Ashland town line.
Marathon Deli is owned by Doug Fifield and Jim Johnston, who established the business in 1997. They are currently celebrating their ten year anniversary in business.
Although it doesn't look pretty this is an outstanding place to get a great sandwich or wrap! I happen to be a regular customer and frequent Marathon Deli at least a few times a week.
The atmosphere is extremely social. Doug and Jim really make you feel welcome. One of the great things about this place is that after only a few trips in Doug will have your favorite wrap memorized. I am amazed at how he keeps track of everyone. This place draws a crowd in the warmer months and most of the time the picnic tables are filled.
There are many "regulars" at Marathon Deli - A testimonial in itself that these guys make sandwiches worth coming back for.
The theme of the interior is sports related as both Doug and Jim are big local sports fans. Often times you will hear Jimmy talking back in the work area of the last bet he won. Jimmy has never lost a bet...just ask him :). Jim Corsi, a former Red Sox picture will drop into Marathon Deli every now and then. His picture can be seen on the wall with other sports memorabilia.
The black board menu is filled with some pretty memorable names such as The Soprano Wrap, The big Bird, The Raging Bull, Bucking Bronco, Road Runner, and Boss Hog. There are over 40 types of wraps on the menu.
Marathon Deli also offers some tasty hot meals as well. There are different home cooked meals served each day of the week. If you have catering needs with an Italian flavor be sure to give Marathon a try as they do an excellent job with this as well.
My two favorite sandwiches are the Greek and Thai wrap. They are both out of this world!
So the next time you are in the area, stop in and meet Doug and Jim. You will be glad you made the trip.
