Of all the social networks that are popping up across the Internet , ActiveRain still remains heads and shoulders above the others. Reflecting the best of Web 2.0 and our participation in it, we are a group that never lost sight of why we are here. And those reasons can be as varied as we are as individuals.

These reasons collectively are not just self serving but serving each other as friends, colleagues and above all professionals with a high level of self pride in our respective professions.

What sets ActiveRain apart from the others are some special features that have been in place since day one. One way to categorize them is to listen to the motivation speakers that say about our life plan. In every instance they speak of our quest or the milestones in our lives, and they remind us that we must be able to measure them to be able to track our progress in the pursuit.

ActiveRain set up its system on a points system that gives us with encouragement to build relationships with our colleagues and consumers and as a range we can use to track our progress. It also encourages and rewards us to build friendships and exploit this opportunity to help shape the overall message that the site takes to each of us and consumers. We all benefit from the pearls of insight and wisdom that the contributing members give so freely.

Being effective with our message also requires us to be consistent. Our stories and messages will always be varied but to hold the interest of others we must be consistent that our message is delivered with some regularity.

If you have read certain books and develop a kinship with the author, you will most often look for more offerings from that author. If the author just stopped writing, you will take action and find another author to replace the one you liked. It's no different in the world of blogging. If we fail to provide consistency, our consistent readers will move on to other voices.

I have come a very long way from the beginning when I wrote my first post on ActiveRain. I discovered the site in November of 2006. Set up a profile and had no idea what I had signed up for, other than that I would be listed in a directory of real estate professionals.

In late March, I received an e-mail from ActiveRain that Jeff Turner  had added me as an associate. I had no idea what that meant, but I did know Jeff. So I logged on to ActiveRain, and I discovered that in fact it was a blog site and I started to read some of the posts that Jeff wrote. I read about encouraging others to write posts that would encourage consumers to take a look at us and consider us as their needed professionals. And still others that were giving insight into how to use the available resources for improving the blog posts.

On the last day of March 2007, I thought I would really like to give this a try, and so I wrote my first post. I received a couple welcoming comments and thought Wow, this is very cool, and I want to do this. Of course I didn't really understand all the jargon being used so I set on a course to ask about it and then hopefully to learn and understand it.

Over time, I did learn. On one occasion as I recall in my first week, I got a comment from a gentleman that said his pet peeve was posts with words that were misspelled and I that I had one on my post. In fact, I felt sort of foolish and embarrassed and wanted to fix it, but how? So I asked and discovered that  ActiveRain provides an edit button to fix things as needed. Frankly, I hadn't noticed it before or even what all the different features were as yet. So I fixed the post and sent him a thank you note. On the next post he came back and commented again, this time it was complimentary. Feeling relieved, I knew I could learn and proceeded with excitement to do so.

What we all need to remember is that as new people come to be part of this growing family here on ActiveRain, don't forget they probably don't know what all the buttons and different features are for and their wall of words is just their wanting to give to us and to a part of us. And yes, to be recognized for their participation. Help them by taking the time to write them and give some guidance. That welcome sure means a lot. Feeling alone and trying to figure it all out yourself is a big task and help will always be appreciated.

So now on my trek to the Summit, I head there knowing that it was all of you who helped me along the way, and I don't want to take the rest of this journey without you. You belong right here with me. This are our journey and no one gets left behind. So reach out your hand, and we will go the summit together.

Hey Roberta, Many Thanks ! Love the balloons too. Isn't this fun? It is sort of Hump day. Once you get there we have the a bit of coast before proceeding. Get your breath and look out over the horizons and take in all the beauty that surrounds us. As I told Sally, we want to bring everyone along with us. When we get to that summit it will only be fun if we are all together. Many Many Thanks Roberta for all your encouragement and your friendship which I so value.

Congratulations William.  100000 points is quite a feat.  I used to perceive this as a Points game, but it has become so much more, and as that happened, the points come easier.  Way to Go!

Hi Daniel, What you speak of is the learning. We perceive things to be one way and as we learn, they take on greater and more truthful significance. The points help guide us but should not be the goal but rather a measure of our progress. many Thanks for dropping by and I so appreciate it!

Hi Laura, To be very honest it was a real struggle but a worthwhile one. As I learned to write and make comments on all that I read of others' work, I always wondered if my writing was good enough to measure up to the more prolific writers. I wasn't featured very often and it made me feel I just wasn't good enough. Well, along the way I also learned that what and how we write is a subjective thing and we can not measure ourselves to others. Just keep trying and do what you can. I also learned that being featured as nice as that is, is really not what's important. It is more the effort to learn and try and try again. As you begin to touch people with your words, however you choose them, you develop certain patterns. I discovered a word that is in almost every post I write. The word is "likely" and I misspell it nearly every time I write it ,lol. It is because I choose a certain level of not being definitive. I want to leave some room for question. I am not an authority so I want it felt that the ideas I have and the statements I make are not all black and white. I want there to be room for being able to fix an error when I make one and I have made plenty. But it is also a maturation process. Each time you write you bring something special and so you develop a readership as people feel a certain confidence with your particular perspective. Each of us attract certain others that will find a comfort level in our unique perspective and they will share theirs and you begin to build those relationships that can and hopefully will last a lifetime. I have been blessed with several. So the short answer is to keep writing, the longer answer is keep writing and learning from it. Many Thanks for giving me the opportunity to answer that question and hopefully one day, you will also be asked and your answer will tell a great deal about you as I think mine surely exposed me as the work in progress that I am.

Spoken like a blogger who loves ActiveRain and I can identify with that.

Our milestones on ActiveRain are modest when compared to the benefits we receive in our business.

Even if a member doesn't realize business directly from ActiveRain referrals or consumers, the experience of participating helps us grow professionally and personally.

We take from ActiveRain that which we would have.  It appears to me that you're received a great deal.

That is a big deal.

On to the next milestone.

As I begin this leg of my chosen journey, I am accompanied by many friends, you among them. Thanks for you gracious acknowledgement and I hope to provide some awesome writing and presentations in the near future.

Congratulations on your big 100,000 points.

I first heard AR from RE/MAX Convention this year. I like this site a lot. It makes me fee we are not alone in this business after running around whole day trying to show homes and get more listings.

The best part of the AR is hearing other experts' voice and sharing our thought with each other.

Great affirmation of this network, William. I bumbled into it just this past July with much the same misconception. I just thought it would be a nice spot to link to my website. Hi Paul, Thanks you for your compliment and thanks even more for what you add to ActiveRain. You hit upon something that is very important in all of our lives. Kinship. In our respective communities it is very hard to build close friendships with others that you work with. It seems that people feel threatened to share their lives and resources, when if they only knew that by doing so, they so be and have so much more. Scarcity is alive in business out of fear. ActiveRain affords the opposite, the abundance and you can build friendships quickly and sincerely. I know that some I have met here will be life long friends. I am also pleased that we (you and I ) have shared thoughts as we build our friendship. It would be my most sincere pleasure to be friends with you as well. If ever I can be of help to you in any way or be a shoulder, know I am here and would be honored to do so.

Hi Gary and Richard, Thank you so much. It has been a really wonderful experience to finally get to a plateau. I love the format that you are  using for the local posts. I have a designed that is working on a design for the companion materials and I got a sample of the bulletin to market the site and I was pleased overall. Actually most of the work in designing the shell was done with the site so her job was easier.

Have you done marketing ( consistent with your blog style) using the same logo for the local posts. If you haven't it might be a great idea to promote the site and sell the brand with that design.

I am sort of re-inventing myself as I seek to move in on a different market. So I will report how that all goes as things get ready to launch.

It seems like a good idea every few years to upgrade and enhance what we have done over a longer period of time.

Many Thanks for stopping by and your kind expression of support . All My Best Wishes as you approach your new plateau.

Hi Diane, Thank you so much. I spoke of you the other day to a client who said they are contemplating retiring in North Carolina in a few years. A bit early for a referral but I got ya covered if anywhere near where you serve. They haven't decided where but they like the idea of what the state affords visually, amenities and life style.

Many Thanks for droping by and for your always wonderful friendship. You are doing so well and I know you are really happy there.

BTW, the BOD just approved the formation of a state wide MLS. It will be a big deal because you know that CAR will be selling the design to NAR to sell to other states for the creation of super regionals around the US. I predict 9 or 10 at most to cover all 50 states.

Hi Lane, thanks for stopping by. You are so right, it does take a lot of effort, particularly at first. It supposedly gets easier as you get more experience with writing, editing, linking, providing good format, photos enhancements, wordpad, webpad, typepad, widgets, video frameworks, you name it we learn it. And it is time consuming as well. As with anything though the more you learn the more want to create even more and more unique contributions.

Wish all the best in getting to your next plateau. Mine will take at least 6 months. Work work work! :-)

Bill, welcome to the 100k club.  One thing that has bugged me is the criticism that the point system periodically gets.  To my my mind, it's one of the critical factors of human nature that has made AR so successful!
8:39am • #55
368,758 Points 63 Featured Posts Localism Sponsor Outside Blog

Hi Brian, Many Thanks for coming by and sharing your insight. I totally agree! Nice to be a member of 100K.

I honestly think the Points system is what makes ActiveRain so different from the others. It keeps the motivation to participate strong even when other interferences might try to prevent it. In our industry, we are  by nature civilized but competitive. We each in our way want to stand out all the while that we would reach a hand to assist and be socialized with our own. The value of our recognition is only as good as the number of others making the effort. We are driven to excel while we share that to ensure that others do as well. We often measure our progress by others' progress.

By rewarding a certain type of behavior such as commenting, we compel ourselves to do what might have taken a much longer time on other sites. By commenting we are forced in a way to build those friendships that would have taken much longer to find and in fact may never have been in found with out it.

The Points system is genius and reflects that when the site was set up, the founders understood the nature of the players that hadn't even been found. But they knew the nature of those that would come. Build it and they will come, reward them and they will come even faster, reward them a lot and they will stay. Once you are trained to certain behaviors, it creates a standard. We on ActiveRain have set a very good standard and most sites would be envious of the what will be a long term relationship. We don't give up our friends quite so easily and we will usually fight to protect them.
