What Can You Blog About on Active Rain?  It Would Be Easier to Tell You What You Can't Blog About!

Blog TopicsA never-ending-always blogged about-Infinite # of answers- Topic is What to Blog ABout.  I had a conversation recently with a fellow Stager and asked if they were on Active Rain.  Indeed she was but she had a blog on her website that feeds Linked-In and Facebook and already posted Staging posts there. What else could she write about?  Her response reminded me of when I started out here.

I started out as many do as a lurker.  And when I did want to write a post my mind was blank.  Anything beyond the topic of Staging, I thought, wouldn't be of any interest to anyone here.....Au Contraire!

You need only head to the Feature page here to see the diversity in topics on ActiveRain... or look at the wide ranging Groups.  (read, for example Alan May. .  or Russel Ray)

The First Step is to read the Active Rain Community GuidelinesThey're easy to follow but as long as you have these in mind when you write, you should be fine.

Step Two- start reading!  Scroll through the Feature Page to see what people are blogging about.  For example.. right now some of the Feature Page topics are: motivational, a video tutorial, Do you get mad?,  sunburns, and blogging.

Step Three- Take a look at and join some Groups.  If you can't find a variety of topics here.. you're not looking.  There are Groups on blogging, food, Google+, photography, staging,  inspirational, BANANAS (Bananatude), jokes, music and Jack Bauer!

Step 4: Decide on the Goal or Purpose of your blog.  Not all posts will have the same goal.  You may want your post to reach and be of interest to your clients; it may be Tutorial in nature; you may want to address those within the industry; perhaps a question regarding a particular topic; as a platform; to draw Local attention... and these are just a few.

What NOT to Blog About?    Anything covered in the Community Guidelines.

Don't put it out there if you don't or aren't capable of dealing with it.
Don't write about something that will land you in jail or in the courtroom... we'd miss you.

So... what are you waiting for... start Blogging!

I have to laugh because on FB we would be considered FB stalkers. So are we AR stalkers too?! You know you have to wonder because generally you have three times more people look then comment. And then you have a ton of people that always comment but never seem to blog. I wonder what the average blog number per year is around here!

Hi Kathy, no one should take safety for granted these days. Very good tips for all of us!

So true that many of the posts that grab a ton of comments are not directly real estate related - but if they give people a feel for who the writer is, they can be very effective in building relationships - and the business will then follow.

Bruce-I think more and more Realtor classes are probably including Social Media in their courses.

Morgan- It is a starting point for blogging.. focus on who you want to attract.. your goals.

Debb- I think one of the hardest parts in getting started is to try to set your goal, and then topic.  Once you have defined that.. you are ready to charge ahead.

Dave- you summed it up well.  I think it's a great mental exercise to zero in on your goals for blogging.

Lisa and Robert- All right.. I'm looking forward to seeing some of those ideas in a post from you!

Richie- My name is Kathy and I was a lurker!  Thank you for your kind words.

Pat- there are so many bloggers out there I think it's the ones who let us "see them" through their posts that get the most readership.

David-there are some bloggers here who seem to have an endless fountain of blog ideas.. I have to work at it.  It's like a mental exercise for me.

BARFF- never on earth could I ignore you!

Karen- I agree.. great thing to do.. and there's always plenty of support here if you start to flounder.

John- I hope you do... I'll be looking for your post!!

Jerry- It's so good that you're teaching a class on Social Media!  They're lucky to have you to help guide them through.

Shannon- When you feel like you're stuck and can't figure out a topic.. just start reading Active Rain!.

Karen- just read your post and you gave an excellent example of how reading posts AND comments can give you an idea for a post.

Cathy- good for you!  As a Realtor you probably do a number of market reports but you can branch out into other topics.

Bryan- My BARFF Roger Mucci  (#11) admits that his posts are seemingly about nothing but he has a very wide and devoted readership.  I think the key is to make it interesting and keep it real.

Scotti- I learn as much from the comments on posts as I do from any other resource.  And you are so right.. you can learn about other bloggers by "meeting" them via their comments.

Eileen- I believe that like any other exercise or "task" the more you do it the better you get at it.

Bruce- Come on... you can do it... start my commenting on your 10 a day...!

Evelyn- I must admit... I struggle with each post I write and wish I could just whip one out!

Hi Chuck- hope you found these helpful.

Rosalie- I have no idea but go to Michael Thornton's posts.  I think about once a month he posts figures.  And besides he's a great blogger.

Mike- many thanks.  I hope you're able to use some of the tips.

Marco- back from NY??

Nancy- well said.  Ask most anyone and they'll tell you to write in your own voice!

David- Naw... I just like bling!

A very encouaging post. I often wonder if my posts are too much "fluff", so I feel better after reading this post. I write about my area, news and events... it's what I know best and enjoy writing about.

Kathy, I had to come back to check out all the many amazing ideas and of course I couldn't help but LMAO at Russel's comment!  It reminds me of an Italian commercial I saw once!  If I can find it I'll send it to you (and Russel) it is hilarious, and has something to do with his graphic!

Gretchen- write using your own voice and it will come through on the blog!  And look around on AR.. you'll see all sorts of topics.

Suzy- good for you... I'll keep my eyes open for your first post.

Kathy- it was meant with humor but with the world we live in you'd never know.

Lisa- ok.. so grab your computer and get going!

Laura- aren't his posts interesting.. I'm almost afraid to Google "goatnut".

Thanks for the tips Kathy.  I am still learning all the ins and outs of blogging and just finished up the "how to win friends and influence people on AR" webinar today.  That provided great info too on how to get started.  I know all the newbies appreciate all the help they can get.

Hi Kathy, " Don't put it out there if you don't or aren't capable of dealing with it. Don't write about something that will land you in jail or in the courtroom... we'd miss you."  Oh, so many time I have put myself out there on the frontline and have gotten slammed by my online competitors and yes, even AR.  You have to a think skin, be cool, play it smart and ignore the trivial stuff. If AR is good for  biz, that should take precedence over everything else.

Kathy, when I first started blogging, I wasn't sure what to write about. My first post was pretty boring. Now, I write about a variety of things. My favorite posts are those totally unrelated to real estate...go figure.

Jennifer- the best advice most bloggers will tell you is just jump in and be yourself!

Victoria- you just never know how anyone will take what you've written.  And you're right.. you need thick skin if you want to put some possibly controvesial topics out there.

Tammie- I bet it's because when you write about those things you're letting your real voice speak!
