Don't Change Your Email address!

Real Estate Agent with Dan Edward Phillips

Last Friday evening, having dinner out with my wife, I received an email on my Blackberry from a client that had purchased property through me many years ago. 

After all those years he still had my email address and I had not changed it.

He had moved several times and he had changed his email address each time he moved.  I had lost tract of him due to the changes.

The moral; don't change your email address!  When you enter the real estate business, buy a domain and an email address and keep it.  If your brokerage insists that you use their email address, have the email forwarded to your permanent email address.

That is great advice Dan. People really do need to have a long-term strategy for their e-mail address. It is part of branding you and your website. While I always recommend buying your own name as a domain name, for some people it's already way too late to do that. if you can get it, do so but it is still not the e-mail address that I would use. I like to think far ahead and realize that someday I will sell my team. I would not want to have my e-mail addresses be my personal name. If you think you'll be staying in the same area row long time, try to get a good domain name that has strong keywords in it for that area. Years ago I bought which is been very good for me.

great advice, Dan.. that is why I always advise to never use your company name in your email.. ( in case you change companies, which I have 4 times!)..

I find it helpful that the e-mail over the years has stayed the same.  While the companies have changed and the homes have changed.  Even the telephone numbers have changed.

I've had the same AOL e-mail for over a decade.  It HAS made it EASIER to be found and for past clients and residents.  I have secondary e-mails for YAHOO and GMAIL so those are also easier to maintain now.....being found via e-mail is a GREAT way to REconnect.

Excellent comment as I changed Brokers in Jan. and my old E-Mail  address obviously was gone . I have a MSN account for real estate now but I am thing about the buying a domain and address as you suggested. I have already had a coupler of my old clients think that I was no longer in the business as their E-Mail to me bounced..

Dan, I tried to re-blog  this blog of yours yesterday but AR system  would not work. It seems they made a data base update to cure IE9 problems the night before but that created problems with Google Chrome. They put a blog out today bragging about fixing the problem but I tried to use IE 9 to put a picture on my blog from yesterday and it did not work. I am not sure what to use now.

Hi Dan.   Got your post in a re-blog from Bob.  You couldn't be more right!   Purchase a domain and use it for email as well!     It is also well advised to keep a consistant phone number.   Learned the hard way when our office switched vmail accounts.   Lost many a call to the agent that got the number I had used for years.   Lesson learned.    Keep a consistant email and phone.     Good post!
