Bonita Springs IguanaCape Coral has had it's struggles with monitor lizards, Sanibel has iguana lizards, Naples has the green parrots and now Bonita Springs has an iguana infestation.

In addition to Riverside Park, the Bonita Springs community of Sandy Hollow has seen more than it's share of the lizards.  Residents are calling the city and animal control by the number complaining of the beasts appetite for their landscape.  The green iguanas are vegetarian and seem to be particularly fond of hibiscus blossoms.

The only answer the city has come up with thus far is to have the animals trapped and euthanized.  The city of Bonita Springs didn't commit to trapping the iguanas and has left it up to the individual homeowners to pay for the traps and trapper.

The "domesticated" pet booms in the wild are a result of careless pet owners who have pets escape or release them into the wild to eliminate their obligation.  Boo!

It is such a shame that animals (even though it is an iguana) have to be euthanized because careless people do not think things through.  Pets are a responsibility and take time and money.

Boo is right!

Ok I'm from Kentucky so i am thinking those things are edible. And I'm pretty sure i'm not the only hillbillie in lee county who thinks this way. Lets start an Iguana hunting club. Click Here for a website on six different ways to cook an iguana! These things could be gone in no time! Also you just want to take me away for my diamond mine so you can try to get better! It's not going to work.

Ann, you're such a sweetheart for stopping in to my iguana post.

I'm not a huge fan of reptiles or amphibians...so I don't imagine they'll snuggle up to you when you'd watch tv like dog.  I still feel bad that people just "put them out".  Boo! is right.

Chris - what cute little guys! I wouldn't want an infestation though...they'd make a mess on my driveway when I pull in.  We have geckos all over the place here in Texas.

I was visiting my parents over the weekend and you can't believe how many iguana's I saw loose in the area.  At the right moment if I saw one, it would freak me out!  They don't bother me normally but a iguana suprise might do me in!  Poor babies....its just not right!

"Trapped and euthanized?!"  Nooooooooooo!!!!  I have two friends with iguanas, and they are really sweet.  I used to have a listing with a pet iguana, and he kept me company during many a lonely open house.  That is TERRIBLE!!!!  Oh, I'd be all over that one, Chris.

BOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!

Boo!...if I saw one of those things in my yard I would have a freakin' heart attack! No reptiles, rodents or amphibians for me, thank you very much.  Of course, that goes along with the rule about the kids not bringing home anything that eats...

'Boo' is putting it mildly-

The idiots that just let their pets go don't have the faintest idea of what their doing - not the brightest bulbs on the tree, are they?

Chris,

This same thing happens to snakes, and Alligators.. some people just shoudn't own Animals. I don't agree with the Killing of any Animal, but Playing Devils Advocate, i'm sure you understand there is no other Option.

I am a Huge Animal Lover :0)

Chris,

This would be worrisome for me.  It is so important to have an understanding of your environment and to be careful not to introduce plants or animals that can drastically change things.

1.  The irresponsibility of owners goes way beyond these little pets.  Google Carl Hiassen's articles on the Everglades and you'll read about the big battle that's brewing between the pythons and everything else.  Believe me, Burmese pythons didn't swim here from Asia.

2.  There are a few non-native venomous snakes that have been released as well.

3.  The quaker parrots are great!!  No one should complain about them.  They chirp and keep things lively.
