You Have To See This House! It Is So Unusual!

By
Real Estate Agent with Meritus Group Real Estate SD 14808

I was so intrigued by this home that I went up and rang the bell to ask the homeowners if I could take a photo to share on my blog.  The homeowner was a very pleasant woman that was even nice enough to show me around. She gave me some other details on the house as well. This beautiful house was built in 1984 and has a most unusual roof. Not only does the roof have ripples but it curls down under the roofline! This look is created by the placement of the cedar shakes in multiple layers. The homeowner told me that in some areas there are seven layers of shakes! This combined with the cute little cat eye window above the garage and the paned windows with the beautiful Ivy vine create quite the pretty picture. It reminds me of a beautiful English cottage. What do you all think? Is there anything unusual like this in your area??

This looks like a fire hazard to me.  Shake roofs aren't insurable here.

Christine- It is exactly like Hansel and Gretel! The inside is just as homey and inviting as the outside too!

Wanda- It was so unexpected to find to because all of the other houses in the neighborhood are very average looking and then this one was on the end of the cul de sac.

Mihaela- I am thinking it is just an artsy look and has no benefits although the home owner did say that the roof had an expected life of 100 years.

Terri- I know it stopped me dead in my tracks and I had to have a picture!

Lorrie- We have all sorts of shake roofs here in my area they are just usually applied in one layer. I know they are not as safe as asphalt but they are so beautiful!

Virginia- My first thought when I seen it was a Thomas Kincade painting. It is just so cute and English looking. It really reminds me of a thatched roof the way it curls under on the roofline!

Shake roofs are a problem here. Not something viewed positively. Outlawed. Fire hazard.

Cheryl- Crazy how much different things are from state to state! Do you supose it is because it is so much hotter down there?

It is unique. I would be concerned with either the fire hazard and/or discoloration from mold and weathering. Wood shingles come in either a fire-retardant style or mold-retardant, but apparently cannot be both.

Mike- I don't know but I looked and looked to see if I could find another one like it on the internet and I couldn't! As for mold or fire retardent boy which of those would you choose. They are both fairly important right! I don't know but I would buy that house in a heartbeat......unfortunately its not for sale!

Look at you with your fancy signature and your pretty wall paper.  Way to go, girl!

The most surprising thing about this house is that it was built in 1984.  It looks much older and more established.  I can certainly see why you were intrigued.  It's beautiful!  Keep up the good work

Mimi- Yes it does look like a beautiful older house doesn't it! But with all the benefits of modern construction. The owner was so nice to let me in and show me around and the inside has alot of character just like a older house too!

You know I am really not happy with the roses on top so I am going to find something else to put up there. And yes I finally after much hesitation tackled that signature and it wasn't so hard! Now to work on my Wordpress site!

Julia- I love anything quirky and for this area it is! The owner was very sweet! Can you imagine having someone just walk up and bang on your door and then being so kind as to show you around!

Diane- I know its awesome and definately English inspired! You know what I wonder is what would it cost to create a roof like that. If you could do it on an existing house or if it would have to have special framing underneath it.

Rosalie - Wow what an unusual home. We do have older colonials in our area with similar roof lines like this but not with wood shakes. Very unusual and I would hazard to guess dangerous? How are the insurance rates on this home?

Pascack Valley- You know to be honest I was so excited about the place that I didn't ask.  We have a large amount of homes here with wood shake shingles though so I would think it would be comparable to any other house with shakes! Thanks for associating with me by the way!
