Updating "VA Homes" from the 50's in Northern California

By
Real Estate Agent with Dan Edward Phillips

There were many homes built in this area in the 1950's for returning veterans and their new families.  They are commonly referred to here as 'VA Homes'.  Most of these homes were designed with two bedrooms and one bathroom and were placed on a large lot with a single stall attached garage.

The area these homes are located in is of improving value.  In Del Norte County, many are located very close to the Pacific Ocean.  In Humboldt County, many of the homes are now located in conforming neighborhoods, close to shopping, the hospital etc.

Over the homes lifetime, the original single car attached garages have been converted to a third bedroom and second bath to accommodate larger households.  In many cases an addition was added to the home as the large lot allowed room for it.

Many of the homes have also had a large detached garage built and a new driveway added.

The old driveway was just left in place and not removed.  This tends to detract from a homes 'curb appeal'.

If you will be placing your home on the market in the future and it is one of our original 'VA Homes' consider having the old driveway removed and it's area filled in with sod.

The cost to have the driveway removed will be offset by the increased value and the increased 'curb appeal' of your home.

Most buyers in this area are not looking for a 'slopping basketball court' in the 'now' middle of their front-yard!

I can just imagine how that would detract from the desirability of a neighborhood, Dan! The biggest expense is probably the debris removal.

Good Morning Steve, you are correct on that note.  But in my opinion it is worth the cost.  Thanks for stopping by and your great comment!

curb appeal not only attracts buyers, it can get you more money for your home in the end.

Hi Dan,

So what your saying is ...

No one ill buy a slopping basketball court. LOL

It's o.k. if you go down hill only. LOL

Good advice.

Hi Dan,

As we all know curb appeal is very important and an old driveway is a major detractor to any home. Thanks for the blog..
