Update - My customer got ripped off by her mover - the scam continues - CAVEAT EMPTOR

By
Home Builder with The Flooring Girl

You may have seen my recent post I just had a customer ripped off by a mover

First, thank you very much for all the helpful comments.  My customer has read these (and continues to) and so appreciates the input.  She said it made her day and everyone was so nice and helpful - what a wonderful community we have here.

Secondly, thank you for reblogging and spreading the word and hopefully you have read the comments as there is lots of wonderful advice here - both for clients and agents.  I do hope that this helps reduce the prevalence of this and causes us all to step back and be a bit more careful.

...............

Now, here's the update...a new twist.

Apparently the moving company she thought she was working with was NOT the real company.  Rather, it is a scam of a few guys impersonating them (or so it seems).  They used to be licensed movers but lost their license and then borrowed someone else's and have signed up with movers.com  (sorry, I thought it was Service Magic, but I was mistaken).  They have been doing this for a while and tarnishing the company/s reputation and they have a whole investigation going on trying to catch them.  She went back and now sees that none of the documentation is real.  I have to get a better understanding of the specifics (I was in a Starbuck...of course...and couldn't hear that well.  Today, she is focused on moving the rest of her stuff and then tomorrow she plans to delve into everything further and take action.

Thanks again for all your help, and please warn your clients to be careful.  Based on the comments, it sounds like this sort of thing happens often, esp w/ movers where they hold people's belongings hostage.

Connie - yes, it is.  And, the poor guy that owns the actual company is getting damaged by all of this, too.

Debbie, For others that this may happen to ... Call the police so they may document the incident and get a police report in case it goes to trial ( or the movers turn out to be frauds )... also, document license plate etc;  The optimal course would be to verify the moving company status prior to hiring.

So many of us above have had nightmare stories, like our $100k addition on a house with guys who had less building savvy than my husband.  It was a long term "rip off" but still painful as these things always are.  Juan's comment above is brilliant, as the "County's finest" can probably find these guys through their plates on their allegedly fraudulent truck.  I'll just add that fraudulent use of a county or state license is grounds to involve the local or state attorney general's office.  Last, I'm on the Rotary Club in Scarsdale with the police chief, in the village where this lovely woman and newlywed just moved.  I'd be happy to pass on any description of the truck and the guys and a license number to Scarsdale's Finest, as well.

Yikes, that is so upsetting.  With the way the economy is, people are doing anything they can to get money it seems like.  Even scamming and ripping people off!  We had a story here in Seattle about a guy who was doing something similar.  His business started out legit and well reputable, but as the economy tanked and he started struggling, he started ripping people off.  He scammed people in several states and owes millions of dollars.  It's sad what can happen to people.

Naiveness gets one nowhere in this world..hard looks at everything is needed...so sorry for the client but the scammers are out there in every profession...especially taking advantage of single women and the elderly...good thing she has you to bounce things off in the future Deb!

Kristine - I sure hope so, too.

Juan - Yes, great advice.  She definitely is reporting all the info.

HIllary - Thx for all your support.  I will pass this along to her.

Hilary Yes, it really is sad.  And, that story is terrible, too.  there are just too many of them.

Ginny - Yes, they are everywhere.  In this case, she is married, but she was the only one at the house at the time...or at least I thin she was.

This is also why when we move, we rent a uhaul. Even if we didn't have friends or family to help, my husband and I would be loading up that truck ourselves as long as it took!

I have a copywriting client who is a mover in San Francisco - he says he hears stories like this from clients all the time. It puts extra strain on him to prove that he's one of the good guys.

Amy - Sometimes this is the safer way and it sounds like you are not alone. Marte - Yes, I can see how this would make life rather challenging for the good/honest movers out there. I guess it help when you get personal referrals.
